I recently got my Defender Puma stuck in reverse gear.
There are loads of threads on here about being stuck in first gear but nothing about being stuck in reverse This time last week I had never heard of gearbox detents but all the threads pointed to this being the problem so I bought a full set of detents from Ashcroft I spent most of the weekend doing the 20 minute job to remove the trim, tunnel cover and gear levers to get to the gearbox and then waited for the detents to turn up on Monday The vertical detent to the left of the gearlever is the one that causes the problem with first gear but which one is for reverse? It turns out that the horizontal detent right next to it is the one for reverse. Luckily my detents were the old style mushroom type so very easy to pull out with mole grips. The detent spring on reverse gear was very weak so maybe that's why it got stuck? As soon as the detent was out, the car came out of reverse. The new detents went in very easily, with a bit of threadlock, but I hope I never have to remove them as there is nothing to get hold of with the new type. With hindsight I realised that I didn't need the full set of 5 (4 small and 1 very large) because I only used 2 of the small ones and you can buy them as single items Just make sure that the groove on the shaft that you can see at the bottom of the opening is lined up before you insert the new detent spring. I've driven the car backwards and forwards so just need to get all the trim back in now, a 20 minute job Thanks to the folks who offered their advice, blackwolf, Phil at Jake Wright in Burley and particularly Dave at Ashcroft (Ashtrans) who was very patient with a newbie |

Glad you got it sorted, and thanks for the useful feedback about which detent is the reverse one. The selectors in the MT82 are fairly complex and it is not easy to work out from the WSM etc exactly which selector shaft is which, so your post is especially useful and adds to the collective body of knowledge. |
