Take a look at the levelling switch they can fail DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I had this on one headlight and that was simply a faulty adjuster motor. Replacing the motor with a new unit was the fix. Charlie

If you find that your switch is faulty, I would be interested in taking it off your hands, mainly to fill the hole up in my dash

Have you checked a wiring dig..
I had a quick look and it doesn't appear immediately obvious what the ignition switch has to do with it..it looks to be wired directly to the battery through a fuse and the main lighting switch.. Could the motors be picking up a feed from another source? |

after a quick look at the wiring dig the other day in an attempt to offer an explanation to the op's post I sort of guessed there might be a bit more to the way in which the levelling motor works..I sort of assumed that it might be as simple as the window motors ,, but it looks like there is a bit more to the wiring.. not in a position to do any checks myself atm , so thought id ask, does anyone know the method of operation???
is the dash switch a variable resistance and does the motor assembly also have some sort of variable resistance giving feed back on its position????? |

Some may be interested..
I found a bit info on levelling motors and their controller which i think may be similar to the defender set up.. It a bit involved but you can get the idea.. A faulty resistance track on the motor feedback would cause the motor to run on , but you have both running on and on an ignition live which the wiring dig I looked at doesn't seem to suggest is the normal feed in to the motor control as far as I can see..it's direct from battery through the lighting switch.. https://www.google.com/search?q=verificati...gws-wiz-hp |

Thanks for the suggestions and effort. I have not yet had chance to get a multimeter on any of it but will by the end of the weekend and then I’ll post an update
