110 Defender Suspension (again ???)
Hi Everyone, New to the forum but used it too many times to get my Landy working Whistle

I've been searching the WorldWideWeb for a few days regarding suspension setup but it is one hell of a ride and still looking.

I'm looking to refresh the suspension on my 110 Defender TD5 as it probably has the mileage of the car (~250 000km or if not, unkown). It handles OK but the bushes are fried and with the added roll cage, starts to roll a bit. ARB is not in the image for know as I want to keep the articulation. I will be adding a RTT and awning for the long vacation trips but 80% of the time it's running without. Mostly roads but occasionally will do some off road on a private track.

Important and most limiting point, i don't want to lift it as i won't gain much from it.

At the moment, i'm looking at OME Adventurer kit from Gwyn with RKB101111 rear springs but uncertain for the front, 90 or 90HD as front springs but might be overkill and stick to STD 110.

Has anyone have a similar setup and/or feedback on their suspension setup ?

I'd speak to Gwyn Lewis and get his recommendation on the front springs. Especially as you are thinking of using Gwyn's kit anyway. You can use the Discovery spring isolators as packers to fine tune the front ride height too. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

As above talk to Gwyn. I’ve run his setup with and without roof tent, and both setups without ARBs and no issues.

Gwyn’s OME springs will give you a 20mm lift, but hardly noticeable.

I've asked already for a kit and recommend the medium duty springs. He doesn't do OEM springs. But the OME has a 1" difference + the stiffness which will make it a bit higher, however this will be the same with any HD regarding stiffness.

I just want to avoid as much as possible any more modifications from a lift.

How was the feeling with the kit on the road? Did you ever run it with stock springs ?

I mean, nothing against it but it's going further and further away from genuine so not everything is coping with it. It's already setting lower with the additional weight compared to without, and still missing a bit.

My initial plan was to get genuine LR springs and just change the shocks.

No I never run it with standard springs, I swapped all across in one go, this time with a full set of SuperPro bushes. The vehicle is far more stable on the road than the used LR kit, and that is with me running the Challenge kit.

Well that's the road I'm thinking of going, was just debating on springs, what kind of load are you running ?

Mine is a work vehicle, and have a bit of kit aboard, with full rack. Drives really nice with a bit of kit in it but is a bit too firm empty, which it rarely is. Would be happy to have the roof tent on if I still had it, and it works well in work mode. Would think ideal for you with full rack, and RTT

My 110 was a camper, now runs part loaded sometimes with roof rack, does tow 25% of its mileage.tows 2.5 to 3.5t.

110usw 2010.
I ran std springs alrond, purple brown rear with rear airbags for 50k or so from new. An air bag went, so i replaced with another airbag that did 20k miles

I have now gone to genuine rear helpers inside take off purple brown rear springs and iirc yellow/white genuine front springs. Fitted this at 90kmiles or so, on 108 now and all is good.

Std length travel OME medium.duty shocks alround, pin pin rear with Gwyns top mount.

For me that setup works really well, off road frequently, either work and or owing. Sits pretty standard when loaded, slightly higher on back with the helpers when not towing and empty. Firm ride.

My 130 is heavy, 3.3t with awning, rack, rtt on board everything and lots of batts.again standard lr springs front and rear. Purple brown again rear. Currently airbags inside springs on rear at 25psi. Increased to 35psi when towing, 10% mileage 2 to 3t, Same shocks as 110 with Gywns same top rear mounts. Arb fitted to. I don't find the articulation limit from it hindering, but then I have a rear locker too. The rear arb with rack, rtt etc is a must for me now have tried it I wouldn't go back. Airbag pressure is adjusted so it sirs normal height. Winch front and still on std front springs.

There's alot to be said about sticking with genuine springs if you wish to retain std ride height. Cheers

For a non standard weighted vehicle you would be better off taking it to a specialist for corner weighting. Ride, height and weight distribution will be set up perfectly for your truck and it’s intended use. Oh and whatever you choose in the end , get it completely rebushed first. WARNING.
