Mystery transfer box sensor
Hello all,

Just finishing up a clutch and flywheel swap on my 05 Td5 90. After many hours of swearing and bench pressing I’ve managed to finish it but in my haste I’ve neglected to mark all the sensor connectors, thinking there was only a handful and I could hardly manage to mess it up. Now it’s all back together I seem to have one extra connector which doesn’t seem to have a plug. Am I right in thinking this is just a spare? It’s off the main loom at the same point as the low detect switch, drives side near the transfer box output shafts.

Any help much appreciated

it could bean unused oil temp sender wire.

Do you have the high low input on a td5.. ??
I'm thinking there is only the diff lock and hi/low range switches in that area..the 2.2tdci has a few connectors in that location..ie all the exhaust gas temp sensors but you won't have them..
The reverse switch oil temp if fitted and speed sensor are all on the other side I believe.. so it's got to be the high low as I can see the diff lock sensor plug already connected..,

Looks most likely to be an unused oil temp sensor after a quick google.I plugged everything out in a flurry as I wanted it all on the deck asap to clean it all, rookie error. Reverse switch on the other side connected and the low detect as seen connected too, can’t for the life of me find anywhere else it plugs in or can I remember plugging it out. Soon find out when I turn the key shortly. Was the temperature sensor optional? I seem to see a few online which get connected near the linkage assembly, but mine seems to be not used.

3 pin connector, 2 wires used

Wire colours Black and White/Black (can see those colours just between the connector and the PVC tube.

Arrow C0685 for high/low switch

What you are thinking is the high/low, the other branch from the same point on the loom, is the difflock switch - Black and Black/Blue wires on vehicle loom - again, colours are visible.

High/low switch location (and you can see the 3 pin socket same as yours directly above it!)

Your transfer box appears to have a blanking plug where the switch should be, it's behind the difflock switch connector pair in your photo.

I can see it's a replacement transfer box, so if the switch is missing it suggests the replacement box was fitted without the switch for some reason, and the loom plug has been disconnected for some time.

IGM100000 is the correct part number for the switch  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Is that not used by the ECU to change the throttle response when in low range? Lower max revs etc

Great info there lads, thanks. Yes it’s an aftermarket or at least reworked box by Bristol transmissions from before my ownership. Unsure also why it would have been blanked but we’re up and running again and no lights on the dash.

Interested if anyone has any more information on the ecu making changes to the throttle response in low box. I’ve used it a lot off road and never faced any issues or noted sluggish response. What changes does the ecu make?

Here’s a better picture of the unit on the deck, am I right in thinking the plug above the white connector is where the sensor should be mounted?

It has no effect in high, and no dash light comes on in either position. You can read up in many places the changes to ECU mapping/response Smile

At the moment, your ECU never knows the transfer box is put into low, it is always running in “high” mode.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
