I'm taking a hybrid approach. Using OBD2, Arduino, LCD display showing analogue gauges.

Progress is slow, work keeps getting the way of doing fun things.

Hey guys!

I've done the "hybrid approach" with Arduino some time ago. Maybe this is interesting for you?

There is a huge description of my project named "DeCANder" in a german forum called blacklandy: https://www.blacklandy.eu/blboard/vb5/node/156965 There are also photos of the madmax-style-setup. Mr. Green (...it still has no housing...)

I tried to get the information i wanted from the data flying around on the CAN BUS - without sending messages to the bus. Data packets have been decoded in reverse engineering. With this data, i even got a fuel consumption display on my device. Very Happy It has been running stable for about 5 years now.

Code can be looked at on github: https://github.com/posmanet/DeCANder

Hey, I don't mean to add zero value to the thread I don't have enough posts to DM. I read through that write up, really good work going on from you guys. I'd be interested in seeing your version 2.6 if at all possible. You've saved me so much time and energy, so thank you!

My little project uses an Arduino Uno knockoff, Sparkfun CAN bus shield with a 16x2 LCD display. I plan on upgrading the display at a later date, for now I am just learning a bit of embedded programming and how to operate the CAN controller. I know there are libraries available but many of them seem incomplete for what the MCP2515 is capable of, listen-only mode for example.

I'm hoping in time I can make a full diagnostic tool, I've bought an ECU for a 2.4tdci transit so I can play around with similar hardware and not worry about damaging my own ECU. Hopefully I can do some reverse engineering and gain full access. I'm currently nowhere near but as I find the time I'm keen to play around and learn.
