If its a D2 front double cardan joint there is also a bearing in the middle of the two UJs at the transfer box end. If this is the case you can rebuild them and they last a while but its quite a fiddly job extracting and replacing the centring bearing and if done wrong they can self destruct spectacularly. Having rebuilt several of these with GKN UJs they tend to do another few years before starting to deteriorate and the whole process you might aswell replace with a new one. 110 Td5 Ex Utilities slowly converting into a pop top camper one day

I’d only look at GKN UJ’s or new props, anything else isn’t worthwhile.
I put GKN ones in mine and they have been perfect since, I lube them every 3 months. The only issue is a new prop will be 100% balanced, whatever you do replacing the UJ’s there is probably a little imbalance but I’ve not found that to be any issue. Just so long as everything goes back in, exactly as it was taken out, just with new UJ’s fitted. Then it’ll be fine. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️ Last edited by custom90 on 10th Sep 2024 4:32pm. That’s what I’m thinking. Yea it’s a DC prop. I’ve done them before, it’s a right fiddle. The boot has perished also. The GKN ones don’t last that long either then?

I mean it really depends but i have rebuilt quite a few now For discoveries which i have had and they will last a few years but i tend to find its the centring bearing fails more than the UJs possibly as mentioned above about the balancing 110 Td5 Ex Utilities slowly converting into a pop top camper one day

Might be worth just finding good condition used ones off eBay from a company like LRParts or someone similar - they’re cheap enough and then you can referbish yours in your own time. Handy having spare ones kicking about. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

The centering bearing used to be quite hard to obtain, I had to get some from the USA last time I did this job. As noted above replacing the UJs and bearing at the DC end is very fiddly, much trickier than just doing a single.UJ.
My policy is that if the splines are perfect I'll overhaul the joints, if the splines are in the slightest bit worn replace the shaft. If you really want a fun experience, try changing all the joints and bearing on a Gwyn Lewis HD DC shaft. It's a complete nightmare due to the huge size of the UJs! |
