I have just ditched adding 2 stroke and filled up with BP Ultimate and after approx 50 miles the Puma engine seems far more responsive with no increase in diesel clatter.
So it will be the Ulitimate from now on, i never got any increase in mpg with the 2 stoke, and it doesn't add up to a big increase in my fuel bill by using the Ulitimate, plus you get Necter points for buying from BP. I use ultimate every 4th tank, and I use 2SO (mineral) in every tank... it's a balance of cost and performance... it has cleaning agents and other additives.
I've been told not to use it in every tank.. nuf said |

I put a tankful of BP Ultimate in this morning and it was 10p per litre dearer than the standard BP diesel. John http://www.hampshire4x4response.co.uk 2011 Tdci 110 CSW XS |

A work mate put ultimate in his motor and had problems (cut out, flat, lower power), he then put another tank of ultimate in and was fine, he thinks it was because the fuel had been laying around in the garage tank for a while, so if you are going to use ultimate use if from a "popular" garage where the fuel is bought often

Our local BP place is currently a large hole in the floor
Once it's rebuilt I will be on the UD again. Did similar highly unscientific tests in my old Td5 and found it gave better mpg. Not enough extra to justify the cost increase on its own, but the additives etc have to be worth it in the long run Plus family members have shares in BP and the share price could do with a boost recently |

So, about £6 per 60 litre full tank extra cash for using premium fuel (BP Ultimate or Shell V Power). I'm buying Castrol Actevo Synthetic 2SO for about £6 per litre, and adding 300ml (1/3 litre) every fill. That's £2 uplift (over standard diesel) to use ordinary Diesel, and 2SO or £6 uplift (over standard diesel) to use Premium fuel 2SO option is cheaper for the same benefits? Am I reading this right? Not tried 2SO (got a DPF) in my XC70, but I do get slightly better MPG with premium fuels, and the XC seems to run a bit better too. I'm filling every 3rd or 4th tank with Shell VPower, and the rest on "Normal".... Seems a good compromise. Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

I did some math on the issue based on my figures whioch might be of use.
When using aral ultimate premium diesel I get 33.98 mpg, while standard diesel gives me 32.79 mpg - independent of 2so or not. Actual price difference of diesel is about 8 eurocents per liter. 2so does cost me abou 6 euros a liter and a tank gets 0.2 liter. Based on that the total cost difference per 100 km is only about 22 eurocents. I will continue using premium diesel only - no tinkering /w 2so, much quieter compared to standard diesel and upprice moderate. Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel. |
