I have just purchased a new to me, low mileage Defender 110 240. As you can se from the pictures below, there are already spots of rust both in the undercarriage, which is mostly bolts / washers rusting but also other parts. Do you have any tips on how to treat these so it looks better and how to maintain to ensure there won’t be as much rust in the future?

As you can see, one of the four screws in the trunk has also rusted, weird because it is only this one. I tried to screw it out but it didn’t move. Seems like you can’t screw them out. Anyone know how to get it replaced with a new one, and have the correct part number?

Yeah pretty normal I would think of any modern car in the north. They design each part to be sufficient and this is what you get - does the job. If you look at u-tube channels like South Main Auto you will find that modern cars last about 8-10 years in the US rust belt.

Best way to address is to use a fluid-film type product and regularly apply.

We have the same issues with corrosion in Scotland, I'm about to treat my old 110 with Lanoguard to try and provide some protection

Here's mine after two years.
Sprayed everything with XCP rust protection when it was new. Re applied after 12 months. The whole underside is totally free of surface rust.

Many thanks for all replies. I have found a site that sells XCP and ships to Sweden. Should I first try to scrape away rust before applying? Maybe clean it first and let It dry also I assume? I Would like to replace the bolts but might not be worth it.

Any wax based clear rust proofing product will do.

As it's only surface rust l wouldn't be too worried about cleaning it off, before spraying the clear wax coat.
But you could remove any loose rust.

Over here in the Northeast we brine our roads in the winter. My cars all get coated in a product called NH Oil which is a sticky oil that coats thr entire underbody of the vehicle and blocks and displaces water.

It does make the whole underside a terrible mess to work on. But it works extremely well. Picture for reference of what it looks like once treated

As for the rust on the bolts in the original post... it's surface rust. You could actually probably use a brass brush to knock it off.. or use a rust converter. Then you can treat it with a protection product like the ones mentioned in the thread. Another option is to clean them and hit it with Steel-it paint which is a paint that contains stainless steel and is very corrosion resistant.
