These are some handy wheels we had available for free. Not sure what we will end up with yet but the original wheels on the vehicle are a real mish-mash of types and ages. All in varied states of crustyness, a couple that appear to be age relevant but mostly from later on and have minor differences and non matching offsets. Plus the tyres are mostly unusable and the rims are all tubed only. Wheels are only suitable for a die hard restorer who wants to display the vehicle rather than use it IMO, from a safety and practicality POV. Probable long term plan will be to get some 7.50x16 equivalent tyres on a set of later tubeless defender steel rims. Young lad does want narrow tyres but also the extra height.  |

Re; colour. I always suspected it started life as a dark green due to the odd fleck of green showing through here and there, but while working on the car we found a large giveaway on the seatbox. While inside the boxes have been sprayed blue, removing the centre panel shows the original dark green which I guess can only be Bronze Green. Similar to my Defender Coniston Green but if we convert back to green will have to be the correct Bronze rather than the Coniston. |

A good guide to finding the original colour is to remove the LHD hand brake blanking plate, not many people remove it when repainting.

Rebuild progressing and a deadline looming of wanting it on the road, fully legal, before the weekend of Aug 9th.....

We made it!
Finished bolting it all together on Thursday night. Had to get up early to sort a few exhaust leak issues then arrived at MOT test centre for 8am after just 3-4 miles of test drive. Passed the MOT with just a couple of minor snags that were rectified on the spot with thanks to a cooperative tester. The car got lots of attention from all the other garage staff who showed a lot of interest in the results of the rebuild and how we had done various bits. With pass certificate in hand it was straight back home to load up for our weekend camping event..... It looks good on Disco rims - I had a series two with the same rims and I really liked them. My series one currently has Wolf rims fitted to allow for disc brakes. Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

Fitted a thermostat today! Managed to free off the housing with just one broken stud. Fixed the 1/4" stud temporarily by removing the remains and welding on some M6 thread (worked a treat, new studs on order 212042). Thermostat was actually included in the cardboard box of random bits we inherited with the car, brand new boxed QH item.
Bizarrely, vehicle was previously running with no thermostat but a plastic/nylon radiator flap cover to help it get to temp! Test drive tonight to check operation and took in some chunky hills just to make sure (Monks Road above Glossop and a few more). Gauge quickly settled at an indicated 180F which Google tells me matches the stamped 82C on the thermostat. Temp only moved a few Fahrenheit in either direction all through the 25 mile test. So, now looking all good on the coolant system. Currently got some Holts rad flush stuff in there to clean things up and no signs of leaks after the test drive (was scared it would all turn into a sieve with the cleaning chemicals removing any gunk from the old pipework and radiator). This will be flushed out after a morning of green Laning later today and then we might risk adding some antifreeze which is also sure to highlight any weaknesses....... |

Fantastic morning around the Saddleworth area under heavy skies. Even stopped off to watch some morris dancing before returning home to give the resurrected car a well earned wash.
