oil drops out of air filter housing
Hi Landy-Friends

on my Seriese 3 (with TDI200 engine) drops oil from air filter housing.
I believe it comes from crankcase breather, but I'm not sure.
What could be wrong if too much oil comes from crankecase breather? Head gasket or piston rings?
Is there a typical failure for such an indication?
Engine power is normal, no abnormality at all.
cheers
Peter

Hi,
I know it’s been a while and you’ve probably solved it by now, but yes your suspicions are correct and it is the fault of the breather. They clog up and don’t work as effectively after a long time in use. You could try cleaning it out periodically but luckily they are pretty cheap to replace, when you do make sure to clean out the pipes to the air filter housing and replace the filter to stop any more oil getting in and ruining a new air filter. 1982 s3 2.25D “Shrödy” 1988 110 200tdi “Dave”

hi

i would look at the Alisport breathers as they have baffels in rather than the basic gauze in the cheapy land rover ones - will work klonger/better.

Fit a catch can such as a Provent to the breather line.

My current solution:
I have connected a new breather for the TDI200 engine and additionally a breather from the Freelander in series. Now the air filter is free of oil.
I am aware that this does not eliminate the cause, but it helps.
