Broken shock in Spain
Well, after the last non-start due to clutch failure, we finally made it to the Pyrenese, have done about 50% of the east-to-west traverse. My nearside rear OME shock has broken off at the top bush eye. I know should have fitted pin-pin etc., but too late now.

Have removed the old shock at camp tonight, but I don't have a spare. Pondering whether to limp it home (anyone ever driven sans-shock?) or try to get one fitted somewhere here. Under a bit of time pressure as need back in the UK on Tuesday

Thanks, but it's a rear I need. Fronts are pin-pin. Any ideas where I might get one fitted in short order? We are just south of Andorra at the minute. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

You can probably fit a ratchet strap from chassis to axle, with just enough slack to ensure there is movement but not so much spring dislocation or too much articulation / droop is possible.

Just don’t off road or drive too spirited and I think that will be fine and be sure that any strapping doesn’t get loose or near props or exhaust moving parts etc.
Then just take it easy, but a replacement would be best or safer if you can.
Bearing in mind handling will be different.

Main thing is what you’ve already done is remove the old one, as that could destroy the tyre or worse.

Thats a familiar story, we had one do that in Romania.


See if you can find a friendly local garage to weld the eye back on is probably easiest.

If you’re near these guys they’re pretty good - made up a new radiator hose from bits and bobs for a friend of mine a few years back. I’m sure they would be able to weld that top back on for you.

Thanks. That place is about 30 mins from me according to Google.

If I were to try to drive it gently on normal roads without strapping the axle, how likely am I to run into problems with the springs? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

And put a new clutch in mine 8 or 9 years ago when the cover failed ! 😁
Any shock will get you home, probably even a Santana one.
And any garage or car parts place can order you one from the Spanish Britpart distributor.

You’d be fine, I’m not sure where the talk of strapping the axle came from - that is not going to be a problem unless you’re carrying on off roading.

It will drive fine with the shock removed, will just be a bit bouncy and handling will be affected.

As long as the vehicle doesn't become airborne you can drive (carefully) without a damper. It also looks to me as though that should be weldable - the broken bit is well aware from the exploding flammable end. It should be easier to find a moderately competent welder than an new damper.

I wouldn't attempt to strap anything, it isn't necessary at all for normal road use and you are much more likely to do worse damage when loose bits of strap tangle in the rotating parts.

Ive done similar at a off road day in mid Wales and I drove it all the way home after removing broken shock so if u really are stuck, u can at least drive it to the ferry not a problem Thumbs Up 2008 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold)

There are vast amounts of people in the world driving around with failed or even missing dampers. Ignorance, lack of money and simply not consider it essential and required to get from A to B.

Downside would be loss of stability, reduced braking, excessive tire and suspension wear etc. Nothing that will stop you from getting home.

As already discussed on a Defender your spring could get dislodged, but you have to go pretty extreme to do that.

As for the failure I am not getting the top picture (edit: I see now its the top eye remaining). The other picture shows the top eye broken off, that is the failure right? Rear dampers are easy to fit, get hold of a set and you should be able to swap out at camp.
