Well, what a turn up for the books.

Decided to try driving it without a near side rear shock. Was fine at slow speed and even at high speed on straight-ish roads. Right hand bends were a bit interested though, taken at any sort of speed things get a bit pogo. But, as long as you account for that, no big issues. Wouldn't want to suddenly have to swerve though!

Anyway, made our way to just north of Toulouse and a random campsite found on Google. At reception was a French couple in TD5 110, roll cage , rally trip meter etc. Turns out the chap had an OE LR shock in his spares kit! A few € exchanged and half an hour with my socket set and we now have four shocks again.

Got to love the Defender community

Glad you got fixed

The fracture on the OME looks like a duff weld. I know pin to pin is meant to be better but a well made eye fixing shouldn't fail even under extreme conditions, Defenders have been round the world on Konis etc using factory shock mounts.

Its been a fairly well known issue with the OME shocks, initially it was blamed on people not cutting the cups off the axle mounts or using the wrong bushes.

We have had one fail, I know of 2 others, same failure.

I had it once due to fitting Polybushes, luckily no damage done and was only a mile from home.
I only use Genuine rubber bushes now onwards. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

Great news that you got back up and running! Unfortunate that it broke in the first place but what luck to find someone at a random campsite with a spare! Hopefully the remainder of the trip was less eventful. Thumbs Up

If only, WestCountryPete! Got hammered in a biblical hail storm in central France which has ruined the roof and dented various other panels. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Ultimately fatigue failure, the shiny bit is the repeated bending back and forth as the crack grows, the crystalline bit is the sudden failure of the reduced cross-section unable to bear the load. More analysis needed to determine what initialled the fatigue.
