Which dashboard lights should light up on ignition?
Hi,

I have a MY2000 130 HCPU and upon ignition, my brake warning light does not come on. I believe it is supposed to do so however, so this makes me wonder if I have a problem (bulb burnt out or worse). To get a clear overview of potential issues I may or may not have, exactly which lights are supposed to light up on ignition? My 130 has no ABS, not sure if that's important to mention. Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

The handbrake light but you won’t get the brake/tc light as you don’t have abs.

From memory.

As the brake warning light (also) indicates brake fluid level, should that not come on on ignition? Mine doesn't, I don't recall it ever did or not. Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

Not likely the bulb as they are LED. Red brake light should come on with ignition.

Does your brake light come on when you use the park brake? Suggest you check plugs and cap float on top of the brake fluid reservoir. Also consider scanning for codes.

From memory, I think you should see:
- MIL/Engine (amber, extinguishes after a brief moment);
- Glow Plugs (amber, extinguishes once plugs are hot);
- Brake Fluid/Handbrake Warning (red, stays on until handbrake released);
- Oil Pressure (red, stays on until oil pressure exceeds around 0.7bar);
- Alternator (red, stays on until the engine is running and charging the battery).

If you have ABS/TC, those lights will also appear. Charlie

This is what comes up (obviously this is with ABS).

Thanks guys!

@4RF RDS: in that photo, is your parking brake engaged or does the "brake" light go off after a second or two? Mine doesn't come on on ignition unless I have the parking brake engaged. Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

It goes out about the same time as the glow plug light. ABS TC goes out after rolling forward 15 feet. (self diagnostic.)

On non ABS, the brake warning light is connected to two things:

Handbrake switch
Fluid level switch

Neither of these, nor the cluster itself, operate a "bulb check" (the way to check the"bulb" is actually the handbrake switch).  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Thanks guys, that confirms it! I thought I had some sort of issue since my parking brake was engaged, but the light never came on, not even briefly on ignition. I took apart the switch at the bottom of the hand brake and it all now works as what-I-now-believe-is intended. Because I somehow expected a bulb check function because it doubles as the "low fluid" detection, I thought the bulb itself had gone belly up. The other indicators work as described some post above, so I now have nothing to worry about. Thanks again! Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000
