Offhand I've no idea of the valve lift but I doubt it is as much as 8mm on a 4-valve. You may also have a problem turning the engine to get the inlet valves open on that cylinder if you have to go past TDC if the object doesn't clear the head. When the valves are open the piston won't be at TDC so the object is more likely to rattle about in the cylinder if you apply air. The valves will be steel (or an alloy thereof) so your magnet is likely to stick to them.

Having said all that you may be lucky trying can't make you worse off. It you do succeed, I suggest buying a lottery ticket while your luck is in.

The blank is in the pit of the dished piston so should be able to turn the crank without it fouling the head / valves.

Wondering if it’s possible to “drop” a valve so there’s enough clearance to get it out. I know that usually exhaust valves have greater lift otherwise although smaller?

Not sure if anyone has a TDCI camshaft around but the excess lobe size should give the valve lift ?

Also thought about using an overhead valve spring compressor which would lower the valve further to give me some more room?

Update

Rocker carrier removed and injector seats all cleaned, inlet manifold removed and overhead spring compressor then used to drop inlet valve onto piston at TDC.

Lowered piston by hand turning crank (easy as no compression with injectors) and lowered valve gave me access into cylinder with a Sealey 4mm head magnetic flexible tool. Two minutes later the world looked a better place Laughing

Item removed thankfully saving lots of ££££££!

Hi SilverPuma or anyone else with overhead valve spring compressor recommendation,

I have just done the same thing as you and dropped a injector hole seal thinging into the No1. cylinder Twisted Evil . I want to try your technique, but was looking for a recommendation for the valve spring compressor. Did you use something like this one? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/133756585919?it...amp;edge=1

Cheers,

Colin

That’s it exactly.

Takes a lot of patience then with the magnet tool, otherwise use compressed air through the injector hole to blow it around and out? That was going to be my plan B!

Good luck 🤞 2010 2.4 TDCI Puma Defender 90

Just be careful that the compressed air is not too quick or too powerful, otherwise it may drive the piston down, then dropping your now released valve. That would be a step backward Big Cry

Were the blanking plugs out of one of the commonly available kits?
Strikes me if there are two people on here that have the same problem that maybe they aren’t fit for purpose.

I’ve got a kit and have used it a couple of times, and I understand why the aren’t just simply bigger as you need to clean the injector seat.

Maybe you could magnetise the plugs so they wouldn’t want to leave the hole and drop in……….maybe that would make them hard to remove though. 2011 130 Utility Body

I must admit it was a cheap eBay kit. In a way that helped as the blanks were steel and magnetic as opposed to ally. The blanking plug flange could have been bigger to prevent this I’d say. It’s easy to push the blank through the hole accidentally when cleaning the injector gallery using tools etc…… 2010 2.4 TDCI Puma Defender 90

If the piston was at TDC would that hold it it place and prevent it falling in? Or is the insert not long enough for that?

Inserts aren’t that long and pistons are dished 2010 2.4 TDCI Puma Defender 90

Hi,

So first of all SUCCESS Very Happy! I got the little metal bit out yesterday. If any one else runs into this issue, these are the steps I would recommend after some trail and error.

1. Remove the spring from the inlet valve toward the front of the engine. The engine leans back, so the metal thing is more likely to move to the back of the engine.
2.Lower piston on the problem cylinder and use your magnetic probe through the injector port to locate and grab the lost metal bit. I did this a few times, pulling the magnetic probe up out of the port so I could hear the metal bit drop. This meant I knew I could reliably grab the metal bit.
3. Grab the metal bit through the injector port again, but don't fully remove the magnetic tool from the port. The idea is the metal bit will be at the top of the cylinder.
4. Move the piston back up close to the top then lower the valve you have remove the spring from.
5. Remove the magnetic probe and and try and drop the metal bit to the back of the piston.
6. Stages 3. to 5. should mean the metal bit is not under the valve you are working with.
7. Insert magnetic probe through the inlet port and move the piston up further until the valve is nearly gripping the probe. Hopefully, the top of the cylinder can now be reached by the probe.
8. Wriggle the probe around a bit.
8. Lower the piston and valve again to create some room to remove the probe and hopefully the metal bit.
9. Pull out the probe and either swear and try again (no metal bit) or swear and dance around (metal bit retrieved).

The picture below is the shape of the magnetic probe after successful retrieval.

Good luck to anyone trying this and thanks to SilverPuma for the suggestions.

Cheers,

Colin
