FRC4206 is it needed
I have bought a swivel housing kit and have noticed that the large seal on the swivel housing only has the retaining plate. There is no gasket FRC4206 in the kit. So the question is does this need to be purchased separately or is it not needed? This is on a Puma 2011 110 2.4

Thanks
John

So what you have is a large seal with a retaining plate being part of it?

Or you have a large seal and no plate.

There should be large seal and plate to hold seal in place. From your description sounds like you have a combined one? Cheers

I have the seal and the retaining plate. But in the picture below number 5 states there is a washer or gasket between the retaining plate and seal.

When I rebuilt my 10 spline axle swivels, there was a paper gasket. The gasket might be required because there are some locations in the housing where there was nothing for the seal to butt against.
But also 10 spline hubs originally had double retaining plates, so a gasket could seal better. Plus the swivels were specified with EP90 oil.

Later swives might be constructed a bit differently. But I would not bother too much about a paper gasket. A bit of RTV on the outside surface of the seal is good insurance against leakage. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I can’t remember a gasket being there when I dismantled it a week ago. I might just add a little RTV just to be sure of no leaks.

The following diagram does not seem to have a gasket.

My 2012 swivel assembly is currently off my 90. I might take out the plate and check, as anyhow it shows some bad corrosion on the plate, so good time to replace since I have spare. I can feedback. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Removed my 2012 swivel seal retaining ring (only 1 retaining plate, that looks like a port hole from the Titanic) and there is no gasket.

Btw, your first diagram shows 2 retaining plates, which is same as the earlier swivels. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

The one you are showing in your workshop manual John P looks to be of the older oil filled swivels and corresponds to the diagram from LR Workshop for 1987 - 2006 Defenders as shown below (item 12).
The later swivels on your car will be grease filled and no longer have the seal gasket between the seal and plate as shown on the diagram linked by Dinnu.

Thanks all for the feedback. Bow down

My picture was taken from the LR workshop manual for Pumas from 2007 to 2016. I have just put a little RTV on to make a better seal.

Last time I used the "seal holder" custom made from stainless with the big hole made a bit smaller. It is a bit better when the car is used off road. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile
