Swivel to axle bolts
How to folks torque the bolts that fit the swivel housing to the front axle? I cannot get a socket on there. Is the a special tool for this?

Never torqued them in 35 yrs, just done them up nice and tight with some thread lock on the bolts.

As above. Use common sense instead of a torque wrench.

Very few fasteners on a Defender need a torque wrench.

Actually you can use a regular spanner and a torque wrench at the same time. If you keep the spanner and the torque wrench perpendicular (90 degrees) to each other, the moments exerted by the torque wrench are exactly equal to the moments at the other end of the spanner. If not, the spanner will go spinning.

I use a double ring spanner for swivel bolts. 9/16” fits really nicely. Other end is 1/2” and could easily put a 1/2” extension nut and use a 1/2” socket on the torque wrench. But as others said, its not really required, so I just do them up by hand, roughly to the same force I needed to undo them… which probably is an over tightening Whistle 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Noticed you have a 2012 Defender. So just do the bolts. It is more likely that the complete flange falling off than the bolts failing Rolling with laughter

Thanks for the replies. Actually this is for my other Defender which is a 110 2.4 2011, which has the friction weld . Thumbs Up

I'll just tighten them with an spanner with a "bump" of a dead hammer and some "blue" locktight.

I made this tool.

It was prettier but the guy that welded it for me cooled it under cold water, subsequently it broke on the first try. I re-welded it and now it works perfectly.

I made it from an old 14mm spanner and a socket that I cut to length.
Use it at 90 degrees to the axis of the torque wrench.

There are also what are called “Universal spanner adapter”, that kind of goes onto a spanner and provides a 1/2” drive so can fit a torque wrench on it. Google is your friend. As also mentioned, if the spanner and torque wrench are at 90degrees to each other, the torque setting set in the torque wrench is the final torque implied on the bolts. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
