Cylinder head bolts .... torque sequence and lubrication
Hi,
Jus in process of installing another (td5) cylinder head gasket and couple of questions

1). The Elrig (?) gasket has a note that specifies a different. bolt tightening sequence than that in the haynes manual and the LR workshop manual.... use that one or the one in the manual?

2). an awful lot of oil/water went down the cylinder head bolt holes when i took the head off (long story). Should i be concerned re torque settings? Used a syringe and some tubing to suck out contents ( one bolt hole was full of. oil/coolant.

Have carefully screwed in an old bolt as far as it'll go finger tight , taken it out and wiped thereads clean.

ok head on, bolts in finger tight ... and just notived that the AMC head bolts have a different torquing sequence that LR/Haynes 30nm,65nm,back off 90 deg,65nm,90deg,90deg,90deg,45 deg Santa - 1977 Series 3 - new chassis, tub, disc brakes,SU Carb

I advise you to follow AMC's instructions, but more importantly, blow out the holes in the engine block well so that there is no oil left inside them because the tightening would be incorrect.

Hi,
OK AMC - Yeah thats what i thought

Re presence of oil. I've used a syringe and some tubing to suck out as much oil as i can and then used an old head bolt to repeatedly. screw it in hand tight ;remove and clean oil off threads untll no appreciable oil visible. Did this with the head off so was actually screwing the bolt in further than it would do when the head was on.

It's as good as i can get. Head now back on and ill repeat the procvess 1 more time
