Launch Control
1. Select sand mode
2. Put gear into D, then flick gear stick left to S1.
3. Hold break down with left foot
4. Push accelerator down fully
5. Release break pedal

That 'Trick' was first used in the Freelander 2, LR could not understand why clutches were burning out so quick.

Not the best use of your torque converter Sad

Completely agree. Only found about it recently. V rapid as a one off though.

Yes with most automatic transmissions you can select D, hold it on the brake and floor the accelerator then release the brake once the RPM stabilises

The vehicle should then take off like a rocket.

However l wouldn't recommend it. Not unless you have a stock of spare transmissions in your garage.

l imagine most new vehicles have some sort of safety interlock to prevent such abuse, maybe selecting "SAND" mode bypasses it on the Defender.
