Both Sides At Once?
This was a little shocking . . . Has anyone seen both sides go at once before? I recently had a set of new brakes and bearings fitted to the V8 and then drove it 120 miles without issue. Upon coming to use the vehicle for the next time (Saturday), I found the front wheels to be locking up to the extent I couldn’t even drive out of the shed.

My guess is that the stub axles are incorrect for the vintage of One Ten or worn.

The stubs and hubs are different on early V8 110s

I had to modify a Td5 Hub as I couldn't get one at the time.

Best to buy by part number, but check its not been modified before.

I am sure this is the exception but frankly pretty shocking that any professional shop can sent this on its way. Having had an interest in cars for 40+ years, say from about 8-10 years old, I have seen personally way too may not similar examples to now COMPLETELY avoid the motor trade industry.

Just an example, my parents had a Volvo in the '80s and it ended up with a spinning front wheel bearing. I was old enough to be allowed to open it up and found no grease seal fitted at the back, bearing run dry and seized. Going back through the receipts about a year earlier the Volvo garage had changed the brake discs and not fitted a seal. Checked the other side and was the same, just not seized yet. Not an accident, just incompetency.

Incompetency, poor trouble shooting (computer says..) and substandard and cheap parts, I don't want any of my cars touched by a garage.

Your problem can all be fixed with parts available.

I’m going to have Chris at Venture4x4 do a full investigation, as I do not want to risk this happening again! I’m amazed it wasn’t worse and that I was able to park up without any idea of what damage had been caused.

Chris didn’t fit the new brakes, they were done elsewhere with some other major works, but I trust him and his team to do a thorough job.

I’ll report back once I know the cause. I suspect a mismatch of parts. Charlie

First glance and I think your problem is pretty obvious. Incompetence from whoever fitted the brakes.

The disc retaining bolts are only meant to have threadlock on them - it looks like they've had copper slip put on them. In fact new bolts are usually supplied with thread lock pre-applied. They'll have just worked loose with the vibration a wheel normally sees whilst driving. The bolt heads shearing like that is characteristic of the bolts not being tightened up properly which is what would happen with copper slip applied.

I assume from the lack of damage on the stub shaft that they did actually do up the hub nut properly then? Ed

That’s an interesting observation, and not something I had considered!

Well it seemed that the hub nuts had been done up correctly, although I wasn’t impressed by the fact it looked like the retaining washers that are bent over were the old ones re-used . . . Charlie

Also looks like there's some copper slip between the bearing outer race and hub. That again is meant to be drifted in with a dry surface so the race doesn't spin. It might be possible I guess that that starts slipping at which point the bearing race is harder than the hub so the hub should wear faster. I doubt you'd see any effect in 120 miles but again goes back to the incompetence.

It's a subjective topic but I'd also question the need for so much copper slip on the hub faces. Personally I don't and have never had an issue getting a wheel off - sometimes they're a little stubborn but a quick kick to the outer edge and they come off easily enough. Same thing applies, applying the copper grease changes the torque characteristics of the fastener so the wheels could be working loose helping exaserbate everything. Ed

I don't really know where to start..... As you seem to be a business I suggest you change workshops pretty sharpish and issue legal proceedings against the company that did this work. Not only was it sub-standard work, it was downright dangerous and a risk to anyone driving the vehicle and anyone nearby at the time! An amateur who had watched a how-to video on YouTube would likely do a better job.

No no, I’m not a business (as much as I wouldn’t mind playing with LRs for a living)! I’m going to see what comes of having everything stripped, cleaned, and rebuilt to the book before taking any further action.

As in they'd put spring washers there? If I remember correctly there's nothing because flanged bolts should be used. Ed
