Diesel knock when engine cold

Every diesel vehicle l've driven has had that familiar diesel sound, particularly when cold.
Particularly under load.

Except for my Defender D250.

Even on cold mornings you'd barely know it was a diesel, just a slight rustling sound from the front.
l wonder,
How did Land Rover make the diesel engine so quiet on this vehicle?

It's been that way for years on most diesels. No idea how they do it, but very clever. I've had a few hire cars that i've had to check the fuel flap to confirm they are diesel.

I think its all about controlling the injecting timing and duration, which on modern diesels is all electronic. Clever stuff for sure.

Problem with modern diesels is all the emissions system makes them fragile and expensive to repair. Add to it steeper depreciation going forward with Diesel becoming environmentally less acceptable and I think the days of Diesel for 'domestic use' are counted.
