Chile 2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Chawton White
anyone knows what kills the VCV? And in particular the one on the 2.4 engine. Puma 110" SW

Water in fuel certainly kills the 2.4 VCV, and I think low quality fuel also reduces it’s lifespan. So regular fuel filter draining and potentially more regular fuel filter replacement, with gen LR fuel filter, should help. Plus be careful where you buy your diesel.

Water, dirt, coming from Britpart, or being a counterfeit part seem to be the main killers.

In a parallel world, Toyota changed the desing of their SCV (known as short and long SCV) for the same 1KDFTV engine due to constant failure and short life. Problem solved. Puma 110" SW

Thanks to this thread and Hank my VCV journey has come to an end….so far!
I had bought and fitted what I thought were the genuine VCV’s only to find they lasted less than 6-12 months in fact one lasted about 8 weeks! And they were all aftermarket copies.
After Hanks advice I bought the one mentioned in here with a G on the part number, no issues at all so far Bow down 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8
2010 110 XS Utility 2.4TDCI
2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 (gone)
2007 Discovery HSE TDV6 (gone)
1993 110 csw 200 tdi (gone)
1994 90 HT 300 tdi (gone)
1994 discovery 300tdi (gone)
90 hybrid 3.5 v8 (gone)
Range rover bobtail 3.5 v8 (gone)

DENSO DCRS300260 seems to be genuine and comes with two mounting pins so you can position valve + gasket without danger dropping them.
I am not sure if these pins were delivered with my first try of a VCV...

As soon as I can I´ll disamble the original SCV to check if the bottom of the internal cylinder shows some scuffing. Looks like some older L200 Mitsubishi users manage to polish the internals and bring back to service the SCV (which is the very same bit. And Nissan as well). But looks like as well, the lifespan of those Mitsu SCV are in the range of 100-150kkm. Puma 110" SW

It is rather ironic for our defenders, but the more modern the Diesel engine the less tolerant it is to operating in the challenging environments and geographies that the defender was designed for. I.e DPF equipped 2.2’s have problems if used on farms where they don’t go on long high speed runs ! It’s really hard to get C1 low saps oil (for 2.2 DPF defenders) in many places like Africa. Low quality fuel can impact the VCV on the 2.4. The list goes on and on.
However the earlier engines such as the 300TDI have no such issues. C'est la vie !

Good morning
I started looking at my Haynes yesterday, to check what is needed to change the vcv, filter and sensor - It says "Sensor not possible to replace sensor separately from fuel rail, the same for the pressure limiting valve.
Sounds strange to me - but would like some advice before starting, as currently it is my only running car.

I don't have the 2.4, but do read a lot of the posts on here..
I made this point on another thread but don't recall any responses..
The general comments about water and dirt killing a vcv I'm sure are valid..but those issues will also kill the hp pump and injectors..which doesn't seem to follow on from failed vcv's..
I suggested that it might be a priming of the lp fuel to the hp pump that had a bearing on failures..that is the main or major difference between the 2.2 and 2.4 fuel systems ..the 2.2 has an electric pump in the tank and I suspect primes more efficiently..could the 2.4 vcv be working in less than ideal conditions after start up for a while???

Thanks for the response.
I cleaned the injectors a few months back, they all seemed fine - put new seals etc. Tried running injector learn again through Nanacom, but never seemed to register. At low speeds it seems to be kangarooing, but evens out when going quicker. I have not done a pump learn, as I don't have the right tool.
Looking on the forum, responses seem to go into the direction of HP side, so that is where I have been looking, so far.
I will do some reading on the LP side and see how to investigate.

If you have any doubts about injectors the basic tried and tested method to start with is a leak off test..that will identify any dodgy injectors
Not that ive been down that route yet but I've considered a similar test on the main return line as giving a good indication of the total return..ie that would include the hp pump cooling and excess return..if you record known good it may help identify bad at a later stage..
