So here we are a good few years later. Crispy floor pans and slug like V8. So she's being professionally pulled apart with me helping to keep costs under control (ish). Chassis is remarkably solid and just needs an outrigger and a few small patches. Bulkhead is also solid apart from two very crispy floor pans but has come out anyway. The Rover V8 was really tired when I got her - I had the camshaft replaced but she was still gutless and drank water. Engine is down to the block for it to be crack tested and then built back up again :-
9.35:1 Pistons Second new cam but this time with the preload done correctly - other cam was shot after 800 miles. Range Rover exhaust manifolds. Weber 500 MegaJolt Ignition Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

Moving quickly now the chassis is done - new springs and shocks on and the front axle repaired ("a bit thin on a couple of mounts ")

It started life as a poverty spec hardtop, probably on contract hire, and was converted by Dormobile for a previous owner.
Very basic conversion, roof and an adjustable sleeping platform with a fridge beneath it. For us it’s just a mobile full sized double bed, we live and cook outside under the awning unless it’s very rough, when we retreat to the Oztent porch😊 |

This is very cool, how do you find the economy with long distance driving - have you seen a good improvement with these changes? 4.0 V8 Defender 90

Engine is at this stage.
Click image to enlarge Fuel economy left me looking underneath for a fuel leak when she was last on the road but the performance was verging on dangerous. I ran her down a busy dual carriageway and not enough beans to get out of the inside lane and lorries. When we pulled her apart for the second time I was missing one lobe on the camshaft and suspect the others weren't closing either. I didn't buy her for economy but hope to get up to 15mpg and beyond as the upgrades were done for leisurely cruising not out and out performance. I'm also moving to 16" rims with 235/85 profile tyres that should help a bit as well. Will keep everyone posted on engine progress and results. Last edited by Electron on 30th May 2024 9:48am. I too have been looking for leaks with my 1UZ conversion... it appears I ought to get used to it or grow a little... 4.0 V8 Defender 90 My Instagram |
