Crispy footwells been replaced and lots of little bits and pieces .. didn't want to upload 72 photos of rust so here's the final result before painting.

Engine is at this stage.

Fuel economy left me looking underneath for a fuel leak when she was last on the road but the performance was verging on dangerous. I ran her down a busy dual carriageway and not enough beans to get out of the inside lane and lorries. When we pulled her apart for the second time I was missing one lobe on the camshaft and suspect the others weren't closing either. I didn't buy her for economy but hope to get up to 15mpg and beyond as the upgrades were done for leisurely cruising not out and out performance.

15mpg is very achievable from a 3.5 RV8. Mine varies between 11 - 17mpg, depending upon how and where I’m driving! Charlie

Charlie,

Thanks - obviously not the best purchase if going for economy but I'm a sucker for the burble of a V8 and happy to pay the price. I do hope the proper engine refresh gets be better driveability as she had a massive shortage of beans taking the fun out of driving ... and starting her was also a nightmare. I live in hope !

If we cared about MPG, we’d be driving 80mpg soulless Euro hatchbacks!

I think with an engine refresh, the right set-up, and favourable tyres/gearing, you could even tickle 20mpg! Dizzyingly efficient, I know! Charlie

Great to see this still going and approaching roadworthiness again!

I was the owner back in 2006-7. It was my first Land Rover; bought it from a guy in Ambleside who was having a clearout at the insistence of his wife. I was told it began life towing a lighting rig round Newcastle, although it has a Birmingham number plate. I think he was the one that gave it the colour scheme. When I got it he had also painted the wheels green, which looked awful, so I at least painted them black.

Didn't really do much else with it, just used it as mountain bike transport and a mobile changing room. I'll see if I can dig some photos out of its tenure with me... I did take it to a few bike races in Scotland.

In 2007 I was sent to Manchester with work and left the 110 in Cumbria... eventually needed to sell so eBay it was, some guy got a coach from Stevenage to Manchester where he met me and drove it home. I do recall being overtaken by a Portakabin on the back of a lorry whilst trucking down the M6.

Haven't had a Defender for a while - the black 110 Td5 I sold to a friend in 2017 - but still driving gas guzzlers from other brands.

Slightly delayed due to holidays, but here are a couple more pictures of this vehicle under my ownership... both pictures from 2006 I would reckon. One at home in the Lakes (with me driving) and the other at a mountain bike race in southern Scotland.

I'm sure there are others (I can remember more taken round the Lakes) but I can't find them as yet, despite extensive trawling.

Best of luck with the recommissioning...

Engine nearly built - +10 on big ends and mains - 9.35:1 pistons (up from low compression jobbies) - standard crank - new rockers + shafts + cam and followers + valves. Weber 500 to go on with Range Rover exhaust and MegaJolt.

Onward !

Very nice! It’ll be interesting to see what power the rebuilt lump makes! Are you planning on having it tuned and setup on a rolling road? Charlie

We're putting a sensor plug in the exhaust and have manifold pressure in the MegaJolt dashboard so will do as much as we can "on the fly" before taking it to a rolling road. Just seeing what we get out of her will be interesting .. 135bhp ?

I think you’ll get a bit more than 135bhp. My 3.5 is on low comp. pistons, a standard cam, tuned SU carbs, and a custom exhaust. That made around 140bhp on a rolling road. Charlie
