Dinitrol Aerosol, chassis black wax and internal box section wax in brown.
Extended Internal straws for internal application, small wire brushes, Hanmerite Kurust for any minor surface rust treatment. PPE such as disposable coveralls, respirator, eye protection. (Try not to get it on you where possible). Hair shampoo will bring out Dinitrol off hair, or off of skin. WD40, will also soften it if it got on anything you want it off of. Alu foil or newspaper and 3m blue masking tape for exhaust masking, plastic bags on brake components. DIY price for a 90 probably £200, for a 110 probably £280 Approx. ACF50 clear is good for some places, but is quite “aromatic” I’d keep this away from rubber or plastic, but is safe around paint or dissimilar metals which wipes away, it seeps in joints which can be good if say it’s a powder coated bracket, but against a painted body piece. The surplus can be wiped away. Make sure you have spares, you don’t want anything running out or an applicator straw to break mid job with no spare. The most crucial thing is cleaning and prep, weather like today is ideal above 20.C and dry. A really good hosing down, cleaning by hand and hoovering out any detritus is ideal. Doing the job is the easy and satisfying part, the prep is the key part and the work. The result will last years, mine is still like new about 8 years later or so, and top ups work well as well I always keep a spare can of the chassis black. Hope that helps, I seem to remember a 90 used about 8 chassis black cans and about 6 internal brown wax, ideally 10 had 8 would be even better! Most of the chassis treatments, Dinitrol, Waxoyl or Lanogaurd can be applied DIY and without a ramp, lifting the vehicle just means less rolling around on your back and getting covered in wax.
As far as products are concerned, everyone will give their personal preference. I tend to use Waxoyl on series vehicles and Dinitrol on Defenders, mainly because that’s what people as for. Lots recommend Lanoguard as easier for DIY use saying it’s cleaner and easier to use. No heating required and easier to clean up. I personally would question the longevity and how well it sticks/re heals and would want to recoat every year. Dinitroland and Waxoyl I recoat/ top up every 4 - 5 years. If you want a nice black finish to your chassis then there is a product that I have recently started using called “Lanoblack” which I found on eBay.
It appears to be very similar to Lanoguard but gives a nice black finish. Click image to enlarge Jim |
