Metal Repair Tape
This relates to my lawn mower, so off-topic, but given I want to bodge a repair to metal, a Defender site looks like a good place to ask!

The cutting deck on my lawn mower is starting to rust through (tufts of grass sticking through the holes). Our problem is very stony soil and moles, so always sharpening/replacing blades.

Would something like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/ADHES-Waterproof-...1&th=1
be worth a try? I just want to avoid spraying lumps of chalk all over the place and stop the deck falling apart.

Any pictures to show the extent of the problem? Craig.

I'll get some tomorrow.
It's a line about 3 inches long wiht 2 or 3 small holes within that. You couldn't get your little finger through any of them.
It's on a bend so can't weld anything on to it (even if I had the equipment and ability)

There are plenty of two part epoxy putties to repair holes and cracks in metal. Probably stronger and longer lasting than a metallic tape.
I have used them for this sort of repair and if you can get behind the crack and holes you can add further reinforcement using aluminium mesh.

As just above, unless the damage is large. But you can buy a new deck for about £90.
The motor / engine studs, and associated fixings if you change the deck could be a problem.
Such as shearing, due to age and fatigue.
At the least if you did attempt replacing the deck, I’d soak the fixings for days in penetrating oil like WD40, and go very easy undoing them by hand obviously with the spark plug removed as well.

I presume the decks are available for the one you have of course. No Guts, No Glory.

Quiksteel is also a good epoxy putty for those sort of jobs as well.

Thanks all for the feedback. I wasn't sure that epoxy resin stuff would work on a thin layer of metal. I've only used it for holes before and not in metal.

Yet another item on my to-do list.

My Honda Isy cutting deck rusted through, it didn’t make any difference to the cutting performance so I didn’t see a need to repair it.

I eventually replaced it for a 16” John Deere mower thinking John Deere would be good. Big mistake, it was rubbish compared to the Honda Whistle Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do…

I have the same Honda. Given how stoney our ground is, I'm worried about breaking windows - the windows by the grass are down to the floor!

It sounds like a decent machine so I’d say it’s worth buying a new deck. Try to keep it clean after use and it’ll last years. Plus a new deck will be cheaper than a window or someone’s eye! WARNING.

Honda Izy is good, that’s what we have. Currently on its 23rd annual season and starts first time.
So 2001 to date is incredible I think! No Guts, No Glory.

I still use a Honda that my father bought new in 1987.

Still starts first pull, maybe second after its winter holiday!

Only on its third blade, still leaves nice stripes…!
