What is the correct battery for the 200 TDI
My defender had a new battery fitted during its renovation problem is that the negative terminal is hitting the battery box cover.

its not the correct battery for the truck and doesn't look to be fixed in place either

you have a couple of options go back to the correct one, fit a twin battery set up , or maybe modify the battery box itself as some of the aftermarket ones are flat floor and allow for some different positioning of batteries and extras.

I believe the factory original battery was a 072 which has dimensions of 266L x 175W x 220H.

It was very very common that these were "upgraded" to a 110 battery which has dimensions of 317L x 175W x 175H. The reason was the bigger capacity and sometimes better CCA. It looks like yours might be bigger than a 110, unless it is sitting on something.

Your battery is 329L x 171W x 240H so the additional height and length is your problem.

Thank you all for your advice.
I will order a new battery for now, long term I think I will go down the duel battery route.

I use an 019 battery. They were standard fit in my 2008 and 2011 Pumas. Have fitted them to a 200 tdi and my daughter's 300 tdi. As yours is a 200 tdi do not go for one of the newer type batteries. The charging system was not designed to charge high enough for them so they will go down over time. I use a Halfords 019 in my 200 tdi.
My battery fits in that position so just push it forwards. Your retaining metal arms will only fit in that position as that is where the slots are for the hooked ends. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
