If it is only happening when changing lanes (not when driving straight) then it is likely to be one or more bushes has worn. Unfortunately there is no "it is this particular bush that is worn" as it is likely all of them are worn (or loose) and the wobble is accumulative.
As a first step, get underneath and re-torque all the bolts/nuts that relate to bushes: Radius arms, lanyard rod and steering damper. Also check your tyre pressures are equal left to right, should be around 28psi. Whilst you are there check for play in your track rod ends and wheel bearings as these could also cause a wobble. If the problem persists then as a second step replace all the front end bushes. Then the damper. It is almost never the damper itself but its bushes. Unless of course it is leaking oil everywhere. Investigate first before throwing parts at this problem.  |

I found I had some play (still have but not as bad) and my steering damper bush had worn. Also the steering drop arm nut had come a little slack. These have helped. 1999 Defender TD5 110

As geobloke says… get under and have a look. Usually with that age I’d suspect panhard rod bushes first but it could be radius arm bushes, and bunch more stuff too?? Tie rod ends etc.

It could also be the hubs are to floppy and need tightening with a spring balance. The swivel pins.

id check the wheels for balancing too, just in case something has threw a weight off a wheel.
i had a problems too at a high speeds etc, and me and my dad put mine on a jack to check if there was play in anything, before i threw money at it. We found  all wrong, just the front wheels needed a re balance. One was far worse than the other, so it might be worth getting those checked 1st, as its a simple job, then follow what the lads have said. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
