Go to page 2 of this thread, I posted a picture from my axle after fitting the catch brackets.

The affected axles are mig welded, and you will see a bead of weld around the axle flange, similar to the transverse weld.
Note 1. The transverse weld has always been mig welded
Note 2. The latest mig welded swivel flange are mig welded still, but are ok. There is no way to distinguish between an affected and an ok mig welded swivel flange axle if already out of a vehicle. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Sorry for my ignorance, I take it that a friction weld it the method used in the photo below that is circled in red? If your axle looks like this then your vehicle is not part of the N706 recall?

That is correct.

The friction welded axles are fine and not subject to the recall, as it has been alluded to previously of JLR's inability to understand the mantra of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" Rolling Eyes Also can be found on Fb, Ytube, Insta & Twitter @4WDSouthwest

I am sure LR regrets the decision to move away from friction welding, but 100% sure this was cost driven based on what suppliers were offering on the market.

'Normal' arch welding is perfectly suitable for this application, but if you keep seeking the bottom of the barrel with cost being a main driver (like many businesses are ran nowadays), you will find quality issues with welds being poorly controlled and failures happening.

Although I can see this being stressful for many, old perfectly fine complete axles are still plentiful and easy to overhaul with quality parts and then easily swapped out. As problems go you can get rid of this one if you are a bit of a hands on defender enthusiast.

I still have a 1996 vintage front axle in bits in my shed in France (Paris) available. With some new parts it be totally fine.

I am reasonably sure that LR doesn't give the proverbial pig's burp about the matter. It may be a minor irritation but so far has been financially insignificant.

The switch from friction to MIG was supposedly made because the FW machine was life expired, and had the MIG been done correctly there would not have been an issue at all. As far as I know the axle cases were not and have never been bought-in, they have always been manufactured by JLR.
