Hi - We are doing similar in July and touring Northern Spain from just North of Aberdeen via Portsmouth - Bilboa.
Over the past few years I have been keeping a list of things I had seen on the forum that were minor/niggling low value parts I had seen cause people significant problems and created a list based on this. Here it is: Spares: 1m of Coolant Pipes 35mm and 19mm Water pump blank LR043268 Coolant cap Main Turbo Intercooler Pipe (only cause I have one – mine are all silicone) Ignition switch UJ joint(s) Brake pad pins Wheel bearing Hub seals and end caps Fuel Pipes, and Quick connectors 9.8, Fuel filter cap. Fan Belt Leak off pipe - o-rings and clips Consumables: Misc Electrical material – fuses inc mega fuse, cables, plugs, connectors, switches, cable protection, electrical adhesive tape, etc. Liquid gasket seal and RTV Gaffa tape 1l of each type of oil Oil and Fuel filters 5l of coolant cable ties, screw/bolts assortment self amalgamating tape hose clamps, etc. Misc box of misc landrover fittings collected over the years Brake cleaner, spray lube, Wipes, Gloves Tools/Hardware: Ultraguage/OBD Multimeter Grease gun, Electrical Crimper 5l Fuel can Tyre compressor Jump start pack or leads fire extinguisher Europe safety stuff Set of tools including spanners, sockets, Torx, hub,UJ and fan spanners Probably far too much! Mine is in next week for a major B service as part of prep. Mine has 125k on the clock and used everyday, Finger crossed a couple of thousand more miles is a drop in the ocean for it. I run various classic cars over the years and each time I've failed to proceed, it's been electrical. I only carry a set of spare fuses and relays, connectors, wires and crimp tool. A roll of Duck Tape has so may uses. Credit card and breakdown cover, everything else is part of the adventure
Prevention is better than cure. Double check everything before setting off, don't forget brake pad thickness. |

Watching this with interest as we’re heading into France for just over two weeks in the summer.
1st stop - Loire Valley 2nd stop - South east of Nantes 3rd stop - Dordogne river 4th stop - south east of Bergerac All but the last stop are camping. Although the French version of camping appears to be a step up from my usual British standard of a cold shower and warm bacon sandwich! Then back home with an overnight part way from Bergerac to Le Shuttle terminal - anyone have any suggestions where to stay for the night? Ideally a hotel and we’ll hopefully get a day to explore in the area. Learnt from running a Morgan 3 wheeler…cable ties and gaffer tape are essential kit and fix (bodge) many a thing to hobble home |

On the subject of toolbox contents, paracord also is very handing when camping.
A great place to stop that's not too far from Le Shuttle is Honfleur. |

We can’t wait!! This is our first road trip of this distance. The 3 Wheeler is off the road at the min while Demand work on the exhausts. They’ve been a pleasure to deal with and now keep looking at their systems for the Defender. Not sure I’ll manage to sneak that purchase past the wife though, so may need the old exhaust to develop and issue first  |

Some years ago there were members on here who recommended a German / Dutch ? recovery and return to home service focused on motorhomes, I bought it for a couple of years then changed cars and let it lapse...
I have breakdown insurance on my 110 and separate insurance and breakdown insurance for my 3.5t IW tipping trailer. My recent recovery from just north of Rennes to an hour south of Nantes (3 hours tops) was €1800 - paid in advance! Insurance paid €300 towards the car and I had to fight for 6 months for the trailer recovery, and that was through Mondial Insurance. Travelling anywhere in Europe I'd look at a recovery service rather than insurance. HTH Keith |

I’m also off to visit the French later this year, with a trip around the alps, starting with a 700 mile drive down..
As such also watching with interest, and love hearing where everyone’s off to, and what to pack. I’ve booked with Le Shuttle, and kindly they offered full recovery/breakdown for a very competitive price, so I grabbed that on booking. So surely.. sensible packing.. phone, wallet, passport.. anything else is just space wasted, (or time saved should such an eventuality occur?).  
Don’t get me wrong, she’s had a full bumper to bumper going over pre travel.. But.. at the end of the day, it’s a Defender.. so.. who knows…  Shafski

Thank you to everyone for your advice.
In regards to what spares to carry I think I'll stick to electrical items as listed above by everyone. Along side this oil and coolant just incase and of course duck tape and cable ties 
Our rough plan is - Stop 1 - Normandy (WW2 sites) Stop 2 - La Rochelle (Sea) Stop 3 - Bordeux (Wine) Stop 4 - Somewhere in the Pyrenees. (Hiking) We'll be utilising the Aire camping sites as they are self service, you can pre-book and they offer basic services. Water, showers and waste disposal on site. Some of their sites are ex private camp sites so they tend to have better facilities. We are trying to avoid having a strict itinerary so hopefully this plan will help us achieve that. When we get down further south we will stay at some private sites and hopefully get some 'wild' camps in. The Aire sites are around 14 euro per night so it a no brainer in our eyes. |
