Do you mean the mid section silencer AKA cat back system?
There is a front section with the CAT, mid section from factory which has a centre silencer, and then there is a back section which has a back box silencer. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️ |

Assuming you are replacing the centre section (with the big heavy silencer ) then it can be unbolted. However the mating flanges will be heavily corroded , as will be the nuts etc. So as with any exhaust work it will be a pain, lots of wire brushing, penetrating oil, impact wrench, potentially nut splitter, map torch or angle grinder. Plus stands to support the pipework so it does not place undue stress on the other sections as it’s removed and it does not fall on you either.
I also have a 2.2 , and when taking to demand engineering, who make excellent exhausts for the defender, they said that as the DPF significantly reduces the exhaust sound you can get away with a straight through centre and rear section. So something to think on if your rear section is corroded as well. Worth giving them a call to get their views. |

Your ref to quite a tight fit makes me wonder if you are referring to the dpf on the front downpipe.. If you are, then yes it's a pita to get out . You will most probably need the engine lifted an inch or so to get it out with the work that can entail to get to the mounts.. Ii it's just the cntr box you mean then that's covered already👍 |

Hi yes it is the mid section i am on about, thanks
Have got the straight pipe cominh in a couple of days. Can you legally remove the rear box and succesfully pass the MOT? MT |

The MOT emissions test consists of a “smoke test” for diesels. Given you have a DPF, and if it’s working properly, the particulates that are coming out are so small they are hardly detectable by the current diesel emissions test equipment. Therefore the mid and rear box’s are not really doing anything regarding emissions.
The MOT tester also evaluates whether the exhaust is too loud I.e “ exhaust noise from the vehicle must not be unreasonably above the noise level you’d expect from a similar vehicle with a standard silencer in average condition”. This is a very subjective test so unless the exhaust is very loud it’s highly unlikely to fail. So noting what the guys at Demand engineering have said I don’t expect having mid and rear straight though pipes will cause issues. Still worth giving them a call to see what they think. That does then make me wonder why LR fitted mid and rear silencers to the 2.2 as opposed to straight pipes from the DPF back. Perhaps someone else can answer that. I suspect they had lots left as they changed from the 2.4 so just decided to keep as before. |

I have a 2.4 with no centre silencer and it makes little difference to noise, but saves a load of weight DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Mine has no centre silencer and no rear silencer, I like it, 3” tail. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

I replaced my centre silencer because it was rotten at the flanges, I bought a Britpart one. I had to cut the flange off where it goes to the front section and use a 3’ exhaust sleeve to attach it. Seems to be okay and is doing the job. No extra noise gained, I just wanted it for the ease servicing the transfer case

It actually is useful to have more room under there, the factory silencer is a huge lump and restrictive.
Even the back box is a little, I find it’s much better without both. CAT in place though of course, but both mid and centre boxes can be taken out and put to straight through. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️ Last edited by custom90 on 16th Apr 2024 7:50pm. Edited 1 time in total |

I installed a straight through center section, also just to gain access (on a 90). Since I installed it, I can hear a change of exhaust note/tone when it is doing a dpf regen. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

What does that sound like a bit deeper or some other tone?
Mines a 2.4 so doesn’t have that. I’ve currently got the factory front end with CAT, Terrafirma straight centre (doesn’t fit that well but works for now). Then 3” rear, generic brand. Sounds nice. At some point I’d like to go Demand 3” centre and 3” rear, I am sure the fit and build quality would be excellent. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️ |

Yes, gets a deeper tone, something similar to a decat'd Td5 without a centerbox, but not as loud (or nice ) 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
