Rear Diff
Rear Diff, looks to have a very slight oil leak..... I think... can I put some of the gear oil Leak Stop fluid in with an oil change ?

Where is the leak coming from: Fill plug, drain plug, diff flange or from between the diff and axle housing?

Think its the flange.... Where it comes out to the prop...... Just noticed the other day looked damp, i have wiped it and hasn't really leaked anymore

Hi,

Yes I have done that..... I removed it and blew down all seems OK.... noticed when I removed the pipe, the pipe has a 90' curve and just pushes in ? Is that right no connection or anything

It should push into a pushfit fitting, and require the collar to be held in as pipe is pulled out.

Hmmm..... I would say its been taken off then , could anybody tell me the thread and pipe size, ?

The original fitting is a brass item that is pushed into the axle hole.

Check the prop UJ’s right away, especially the one nearest the diff.

If they fail, or a bearing cup has failed, that can in turn cause the diff nose pinion oil seal to become oval and thus leak.
And if oil can leak out, water can get in so until fixed try and avoid significant amounts of water such as Fords, river crossings, deep water etc.

This is based on presumption, and bear in mind the UJ’s can be difficult to notice their failure unless unbolted.
Mine went though servicing and MOT unnoticed at the time, I checked by taking it off and it was obvious, not so easy to tell whist bolted in situ though.

Are the nipple / zerks there? When were they last greased out of interest?

Yes we have the original brass one after uncovering the dirt.....I have just got a new fitting and pipe....I'll fit that see if its better
