Defender 90 2003 can, rear seat removal
Hi all,

I want to remove my rear seats and replace the rear load area rubber mat,

Using a socket and wrench I started to undo the securing bolts ( see pictures ) all I succeeded to do was rotate the bolt (bolts) anti clockwise with no vertical movement of the bolt, am I right in thinking that the bolt is screwed into a keep nut which itself is rotating?

How can I remove the bolts enabling me to remove seats?

Don’t think they are captive nuts - you should be able to get to them from under your wheel arch.
Mine are nylocs but may have been replaced 👍

Hi Screbble,

Thanks for that, I’ve sprayed the nuts underneath with WD40 hope that will work its magic.
I purchased a rear step and they use captive nuts, I went to fit some front mud flaps and I had the same issue so had new flaps replaced at my last service, apparently they are secured with captive nuts
As well. Sad

Hope all goes well.

Decent penetrating oil such as Plus Gas will serve you better than WD40 but the latter is a good start.

You’ll find many Rivnuts on your Defender which are great when they work….

Fingers crossed you’ll get the seats out without too much trouble.

You will probably have to remove the seat belt mountings and they can be a right pain. Thankfully they are fastened using spreader plates which you can see in my photo.

Make sure you give the area underneath a good wire brush before applying penetrating oil and also apply some from above Thumbs Up
