The same can be said of anyone who has a RAI - They all exit at the top of the screen and I don't see many of those being used in the deep water - mine just happens to be 12 inches higher than all the others - and the top bit is removeable!!! Fact is I do intend to deep water ford my Defender one day and will continue to develop the vehicle - most people who fit a RAI will never deep water ford it to its capacity but they still fit them!!! Good on yer mate! Defenders leave the factory like naked Christmas trees. It is our duty, as owners, to decorate them and make them our own... especially if they can swim Just a festive thought Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

My wife has just looked at this thread and said quote "is the extra 12 inches making up for his small wi**y"
No offence but i did find it funny. Perhaps size does matter One Life Live It, There Isn't Anything To Beat It, Even The Boss Agrees. Defender 110 2012(XS) Defender 90 2011 (XS) Gone. Defender 90 2008 (County) Gone. Triumph Bonneville (SE) Gone. www.landywatch.co.uk |

I had an RAI on my 90 for driving in the desert, no other reason. I think anyone who has one with the deliberate intention to get wet upto the windscreen etc is asking for problems, be it electrical, oil, fuel, you name it. Not to mention wet carpets and interior because of the crap door seals. Still, each to their own I guess.

Go carefull of restriction, Ive made plenty of tests on pumas with RAI and the restrictions are not helping the turbo do its job so id only personally fit one if I really intent to use it. That does look a little shy in the internal diamiter tbh. Only my personal opinion and tests experience.

I managed to flood my airbox one night through a complete fluke. My Defender has a Brownchurch rack on top and this is completely chequerplated except for front and back. I used to keep my horses in a field outside of Hereford and one night I had picked up 20 bales of hay from a local farmer and had unloaded them in my storage shed in the field and the better half suggested I washed off the rack using the hosepipe next to where I had parked. It was pretty much dark when I finished off doing this with the motor parked sloping slightly downhill and lower on the drivers side.
I had not noticed that the run off from the rack had been pouring down the drivers side A pillar and had been flowing across the wing vent with some entering the intake. It was soon evident when I started up to drive home.................Out with the torch up, with the bonnet and the water had totally soaked the filter and was pooled in the bottom of the box. Ended up making the 4mile journey home with no filter I do take my Defender into water, not as deep as the snorkel will allow, but I am aware of sitting on some very expensive bits of wire and gadget boxes under the seat I have got pictures of a tide line halfway up the seat box and that was plenty for me, I don't enjoy having wet feet when I'm driving |

I sealed my airbox and drain hole with RTV (had a mantec RAI). If you wade, water rushes up the drain hole and can cause problems.

This pipe is 70mm internal diameter - it is greater in diameter than the plastic pipe that runs into the air box just before the airbox under the bonnet - that said, Pete grateful for your advice if 70mm is too small. Regards Chris Bowler |
