My thoughts were if there is a rear window in the vehicle (as I said in my post).....I can't really think of many reasons why an interior mirror wouldn't be any use if you can see out of the back Mark 2011 110 XS DC Stornoway Grey |

There aren't, but that still doesn't make it an MoT requirement. Darren

i have never heard or seen any rear view mirror that is compatible with a shorter arm.
if you do find one bear in mind that the sun visors will require cutting down. |

An old thread, but I was looking for a rear view mirror with a shorter bracket. Guys in a german forum said old Opel Corsa A and Kadett mirrors, http://www.ebay.de/itm/OPEL-Kadett-Corsa-I...e64968edd, fit when you widen the holes. I asked if some one can show a picture how that looks installed.
Anybody here got some experience with that already? BR Oskar |

I also found the original mirror arm to be too long so I removed it and fitted a smaller mirror right at the top of the screen and slightly offset to the passenger side, which has really improved the view out of the windscreen. The mirror (Summit) has plain glass and was about 6 quid from Halfords, but they also do a wider dipping one with prismatic glass which in hindsight might have been a better choice.

I did a search for "rear view" and MOT and this thread is what I found. With the spare mounted on a wheel carrier; a security grille on the back window; and a dog guard; and an interior roof level shelf, the view out of the rear view mirror is pretty rubbish. I'm thinking of getting a good dashcam, and maybe fabricating a bracket to mount it into the fixing plate for the rear view mirror, and doing away with the rear view altogether. I can manage quite happily with the two side mirrors. This thread is a bit old though, so is the law the same or have the recent MOT changes brought anything else into the mix? Thanks as usual. I took my original arm cut about an inch out, drilled both parts and inserted a stud, glued the two back together using e-metal. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html 90 V8 - Maggie http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic42564.html 110 TD5 - Buggsy http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic59029.html 52HG25 lightweight https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72342.html D3 Hse - Fiona Capri 2l S - Anna Think I might have a problem............ |

Cars and Dual Purpose Vehicles first used after 26/01/2010 are required by law to be fitted with offside and near side external mirrors AND an internal mirror (unless the internal mirror cannot provide an adequate view to the rear). The proviso is referring to things such as solid bulkheads rather than how you have loaded your vehicle for example.
For vehicles registered before then, the law requires a minimum of two mirrors, one of which must be on the off side. The other can either be internal or on the near side. Thanks Darren - that's really helpful. Off it comes then - mine's a 1994 so no worries. I hope I'll get a much better fitting for the dashcam this way. Donald
