Re-Mapping Advice.
I have ordered a 3” Demand Exhaust system as an upgrade. The original is ready to drop off.

While speaking to the chap at demand, he advised the car would be better re-mapped to make use of the 3” system.

It’s one of the last of the 2.4 before they went 2.2 with 95k on the clock. If I get it re-mapped, I don’t want it to be silly, but would also like to change the intercooler at the same time.

Two questions:

What intercooler to go for? Was thinking PWR standard one as they are supposed to be good and out perform the standard one. Or, does anyone have any better suggestions with regards to an intercooler upgrade before mapping.

Can you just go to a generic re-map place, or, are you best off with a Defender specialist for that job? Recommendations? And is that a go to them to get it done or have it done remotely?

Is it fairy dust with re-mapping? Can you get better performance and fuel economy with normal usage?

Been a very happy driver of a BAS remapped 2.4 for a few years now, Pete from BAS is a legend. I have the standard exhaust (until it falls off then I’m off to Demand as well), but have the Nuggetstuff intake mod. Can defo recommend BAS as I’m sure many others will. 2.4TDCI 90 - everyday brilliance
S3 V8 Lightweight - in the garage being ignored #newchassistime
S3 lightweight - 2nd car 24V fire risk with a full tilt and the windscreen down
S1 80" - first car fun - 75mph in neutral downhill once #wobblesallround

Can only comment on mine which is the 2.2and you have to have it mapped to clear the dpf function and associated temp sensors when you fit the 3 inch demand system..
I used bells auto services and got the stage 1at the same time.. I think that gives about 150hp, which I find plenty..
While I was there I got their intercooler and hoses.. A well made bit of kit..
Its been running sweet as a nut👍.. And I hope I'm not tempting fate😂..
I've got a picture of the intercooler been fitted.. I modified the bracing to the slam panel just to make sure it cleared the larger intercooler..

They have a great upgraded intercooler ( I have one, as do many other members on here) and silicon hoses etc. BAS are also well known and respected for their defender MAPs ( 150 or 165 BHP for the 2.4) , again many members have a BEL map. The great thing with their maps is you can have a version that provides a tool that you can use to revert your map back to standard, then reinstate the enhanced map whenever you want. The tool also provides great diagnostics for the defender.

The key to having any map is to be confident that your engine has been well looked after and well serviced over its lifetime and that servicing is continued or done more frequently.
Noting your insurance will need to be notified and that can incur extra cost and limit the number of insurers that will cover your vehicle.

Having said all that you really need to think on whether you actually need a MAP at all. If your vehicle has performed well for your needs so far then what is the advantage ?

It’s so easy to go down the route of “ I have an enhanced exhaust so why not an enhanced Intercooler, hoses, intake, airbox, then MAP, EGR delete, Cat delete etc “ and before you realise you have spent a couple of thousand pounds.

For an intercooler I can recommend AlliSport. I’ve had two without issues, but I know others have experienced some welds splitting. I think there was a rogue batch a time back. PWR are also very good.

For re-mapping, I would certainly go to a Defender specialist. I’m a fan of José from Td5INSIDE/PerformanceINSIDE. He’s mapped both my Td5 and 2.2. The 2.2 has an AlliSport intercooler and a slightly freer-flowing exhaust, but that’s it. José has also recently helped me out when I was stuck with a failed head gasket in Portugal, so I can vouch for him being a top chap. Charlie

Out of curiosity what sort of MPG gains do people get with a remap and intercooler?

I comfortably sit at either 26/27MPG in my stock 2.2. But I do drive gently and normally cruise at 60/65 on the motorway.

Intercooler: either BAS Hi-flo or alive ultimate

Remap: Either BAS or Alive and from your description a 150 map will do if you are not looking for looots of go. Although it is the higher power / torque gains that would see the reward of the bigger exhaust.

As above IMO while you are in there if you change the intercooler you might as well do the hoses but for a 150 map you don't have to change anything. It'll work with everything stock it's up to you, It's a slippery slope to keep swapping bits and have the fun map Wink

Both alive or BAS can do you a tool so you can remote map it yourself or else you can go visit them or one of their agents to have it done for you. Both Gary (alive) and Pete (BAS) are really nice chaps to deal with. Thumbs Up Also can be found on Fb, Ytube, Insta & Twitter @4WDSouthwest

i have a had a few.

Alive did my softop 2.4tdci and supplied an intercooler at the time. I found it quite a harsh map, nothing nothing everything style.

Pete at BAS mapped my 2010 2.4 at 20miles and i fitted an Allisport intercooler at the same time. 105k on it now, 20% towing over its life. mixed lightly loaded 32mpg, recently with allisport airbox much better on a long run, avg for life 28mpg.

Pete mapped my 130 2.4 at 60k goes well currently on 80k. BAS intercooler fitted.

Pete mapped my 90 2.4 recently too will sort an Allisport intercooler for it or a BAS one in due course.

So BAS for remaps gets my vote 110%. intercoolers, i have had 6 Allisport ones and one BAS one and one ALive one, all performed, none of them had any problems. Cheers
