Td5 rear axle breather
Hi, hopefully a simple matter as I’m away from home.

Some overnight oil seeping onto the offside rear rim.

Lots of online chat about blocked axle breather being a likely culprit.

From my photo it looks like a push fit.

Can I ‘pull’ the pipe out and purge it somehow?

You would need to give it all a good clean first, then if you’re lucky, pressing the red collar down, while pulling gently at the pipe at the same time, and it should come out. If you clean the end, and blow into it you should figure out pretty quickly if it’s blocked or not.

Whether that’s the most likely cause of an oil leak…. is another question. Could just be that a bit of movement at the drive flange has caused the seal/gasket to give up? Donald

The axle breathers are another feature of the more recent Defenders where "value engineering" has resulted in something almost entirely unfit for purpose.

Whilst you are investigating your breather it would be worthwhile locating the free end and making sure it is somewhere which doesn't get plastered in crud, like, for example, the rear nearside wheelarch.

When you say rear rim, do you mean the wheel? I had what I thought was oil pooling in the inner rim of the wheel and then running down the tyre onto the floor. If this is what you have then check your brake calliper, I had a leaking piston and fluid was dripping off the calliper onto the wheel.

So, brake pipes and unions all good and found the end of the axle breather up in the NS wheel arch. Yet to remove it.

Doesn’t looked to be blocked.

Take the breather off of the axle and blow air through it from a compressor or even a bicycle pump just to be sure

A previous owner may even have added a zip tie somewhere and pulled it up tight enough to crush the pipe mid way or it may have dropped and melted shut from the exhaust.

When I check diff oil levels, and have filler plug out, I also blow through the vent pipe to make sure it’s clear.

Not sure if it’s a good plan, but as I’m on road for a few more days and the weather’s fine, I’ve removed the breather from the axle casing.

Also removed the boost wheel centre. Not what you’d call clean in there. The rubber cap is showing it’s 20 years with a substantial split.

It s it worth plugging that with some dumdum, which I have with me, as there’s now no pressure in the casing?

Or am I flogging a long expired nag? Everything's a hammer.

If the breather is difficult to get out of the axle you can just remove the axle filler plug and blow down the breather pipe Thumbs Up Whilst there, check for kinks in the line. The purpose of the breather is to allow for pressure release, if the breather is OK then it is likely that your axle oil seals and/or stub axles are worn.

When it comes to oil leaks a little oil goes a long long way, so just keep an eye on oil levels and brakes until you can get it repaired.
