Hi Guys,
I've just converted a 2012 Land Rover Defender Puma 2.2 110 from a 5-door station wagon to a soft-top using the kit from Exmoor trim. The fit and finish of the kit is impeccable. However, anything above 50mph and the canvas flaps like crazy! I understand it's a Land Rover, and a canvas tilt is expected to flap, but it's so obnoxious that a conversation within the cab is impossible. I've tensioned the canvas to within an inch of its life, making little difference. Not something one would expect from a £4,500 kit. I completely get it. I've never expected it to be S-Class quiet, but there must be something that one can do to make it a little less 'tent at motorway speeds' and more in line with a soft-top Wrangler.. |

My brother has full tile 90 using the Exmoortrim HD frame and my uncle a 2012 90 also converted to a full tilt. Both are perfectly pleasant at speed and hardly any different to a hard top in terms of noise levels. Have you got all the frame bits mounted correctly? There are a few ways you can mount the stays, which can impact where they sit. Might want to try putting some foam pipe lagging on the hoop or bars to see if it tensions it better. The other thing to consider doing is a full wetting of the tilt. Tension the wet tilt, it will shrink a bit as it dries, increasing the taught-ness.

Exactly what I was going to say, it needs a good soaking and it’ll dry nice and taught if fitted correctly I’ve had a full tilt on 3 previous land rovers and didn’t notice any issues with it being overly noisy cheers Paul

I'd imagine that the effects with a 110 canvas are exacerbated. However I've had a couple of new hoods, one was from Exmoor. Three things I've learnt:
A well fitting canvas can slap the frame - made worse by the faster you go. An overtightened canvas across the cab can reverberate like a drum and boom. To reduce flap season the canvas - the fibres need to swell and knit which gives the hood more shape and shape. A weathered canvas won't leak as well. Park it outside with not too much tension. Slap can be reduced with roll-hoop foam padding - not the hard FIA stuff - but this https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p/roll-...rcp?pn=RCP The angled supports on the military cage are noisy culprits and the foam makes a massive difference. Foam also helps you tension the hood. To reduce drumming ease off the canvas using the two screen to hoop straps above you. But only do this once the hood has been seasoned. Once fettled my hood is really good, I've been up to the Yorkshire Dales and the Lakes in the 90 in the past couple of years and cruised more than comfortably at motorway speeds whilst holding a sensible non-shouty conversation! I only have experience with a soft top 88- but that doesn't look correctly fitted to me. It shouldn't flap about like that.

Many thanks for the replies and your suggestions! It has been a sweltering summer in South Africa, so the tilt hasn't seen any rain yet. I'll give it a serious drenching to see if that tightens it up, then loosen off the overhead straps across the cab to hopefully remove the drumming. I will report back.
