I'm in need of a set of new shafts for my 1994 300tdi 110. Disc brakes from the factory and as far as I know still running the original, stock half shafts.
A couple of months ago while adjusting the NSR wheel bearing I discovered this. Click image to enlarge So I need to replace sooner rather than later and definitely before I do any further enthusiastic off-roading. Anyway, the way I see it is that I have 3 options (well, 4 actually). 1, Second hand shafts 2, Standard new replacements (genuine or aftermarket, preferably not aftermarket due to questionable quality) 3, Upgraded H/D shafts Ashcroft shafts would be the obvious choice but I also found Terrafirma H/D shafts from a number of suppliers. Has anyone used these and know if they are any good? Do you think you might have a pair?
I haven't inspected the other side yet, but seeing how the long shaft is twisted I am expecting the short one to be even worse. It's a Salisbury axle by the way, appears there are differences in the shaft for drum or disc brakes, but Landrover list the part number to cover all axles? https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.com/f...-half.html 1987-2006 but £600 for one side |

Disco 2 one piece shafts fit the Defender Salisbury axle? That would be good if anyone can confirm it.

I've two sets of standard Salisbury half shafts if you want second hand, but personally I'd go for Ashcrofts, so long as the funds are there. I did a rear disc conversion and the standard shafts fit the same.
I've a set of Ashcroft 23/24 with disco diff in the front of my 110 and broke the CV ( early, wide flange - supposedly the strongest standard part ) not the shaft, or the diff. |

Cheapest option is secondhand and these should be genuine (I think I would be unlucky to get cheap copies?).
I know genuine shafts aren't the strongest, but at least it removes the chance if getting shafts of the soft cheese Britpart standard! I'm not running 35" tyres or locking diffs so don't need super-duper unbreakable parts, I've had this 110 for nearly 10years and only recently come close to snapping a shaft (I'm sure I know exactly when I did it, being silly). I'm leaning towards the Terrafirma/KAM shafts at £288 delivered, while Ashcroft's are £410 Inc vat/del @MarkBrown how much would you want to post a set of your used ones to Manchester? |

Normally an advocate of Ashcroft goodies but my mate put Ashcroft shafts and drive flanges in his 300tdi and the splines have worn badly in not that many years.

Update;
I've decided to give the TF/KAM shafts a try rather than go second hand. The way I look at it is that this is a golden opportunity to achieve a discreet upgrade that should be fit & forget. Thanks to forum member Mark Brown for the offer of a used set but as I have clearly already almost snapped a standard shaft I think I would be taking a risk fitting used parts that may not be genuine (no disrespect to Mark, they probably are and he wouldn't know, but I have had a bad experience with budget driveshafts in the past). I'll give some first impressions feedback once they arrive and get fitted but won't know for many years if they are any good...... |
