Rusting tow eyes
Has anyone else had this issue? Both tow eyes are rusting pretty uniformly. This is a ‘23 130 and this started before they started salting for the season.

The sarcastic answer is its showing its true Defender DNA

The real answer is that that is appalling on a vehicle of that cost and supposed quality.

Ask the dealer to take them off and get them painted properly or if you're going to keep it long term take them off and do it properly yourself, Defender owners have had to do this for many years!

Good luck

Keith

Thanks Keith. Dealer is already on it, but claims they haven’t seen this before. So I’m trying to see if it’s common.

Mine went, not that badly, but went. I taped it up and painted them both with smooth black hammerite and 3 months on still look perfect, and if I need to, I can touch them up, but looks to have done the job.

Here are mine before painting

My car has done 21k in a year and no issues. I suspect it's a batch issue. Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy.

Mine at 9 months / 6600 miles old are the same as the OP’s post and haven’t been used yet. My 2020 110 had the recovery eyes fitted at 3 months old and at 3 years old and after numerous off-road recoveries of myself or others using them they were still black with only a couple of pinhead sized holes of rust starting to appear. When mine goes in for the 48v MHEV charging belt recall I have also asked the dealer to advise if this is a warranty item. Mine were ordered when I ordered the car but I know are dealer fitted parts, the set in my 110 were not available when I bought the car and were fitted as accessories later.

Might need them for real as in the last 30 minutes this has dumped on us and I’m only 20m above sea level here in the Forth Valley

Having previously owned the old model Defender, the first thing l did with my new one was to treat all parts such as this with a rust prevention spray.

It only took a few seconds to spray the rear towing eyes and after a year they are still perfect with no rust.

After hearing that the steel wheels can show rust at the seam, l also sprayed a wax based rust proofing product into the seam.
After over a year my steel wheels are perfect with no signs of rust.

It obviously can be argued that this shouldn't be necessary. But l was happy to spend the five minutes doing it.

Was using ours as a dog tether earlier today something we do a lot the one we use often is more corroded I’m thinking the paints a bit thin on these.

No l used something called XCP rust blocker but it's the same kind of thing.
