2009 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Bonatti Grey

TDCI Crank oil seal tool

Hi, does anyone know where I can get a puma crank oil seal installation tool and guide without spending £90-120? I don't have access (nor the skills to use) a lathe otherwise I would make one myself. There is nothing to them and they are a fortune for something you hopefully only need once.

Assuming that you mean 303-682, the tool for aligning the timing cover on the front of the engine, then the genuine part from BOSCH Global (the JLR official tool supplier) is listed at £22.49 per unit (plus VAT and shipping). The snag is that you need an account to buy from them.

I really cannot explain why the aftermarket suppliers are charging £90 plus for a replica - it does seem rather extortionate. You could give Dingocroft in High Wycombe a call, they usually list LR special tools at only around 100% mark-up but don't list this one on thier website.

Thanks, I have found some unofficial ones on ebay for around £55 but still a wedge of cash for a piece of turned nylon and steel. The markup on those things are incredible...low volume product I suppose.

Making your own doesn't require any special workshop tools. Just a scrap piece of wood and a few bolts.
Give it a go, you can't go far wrong.

That will obviate the need for 303-679 (the remover/installer tool) but doesn't help with the need for 303-692, the aligner for the cover.

It is again frustrating that the former is a mere £19.65 (+VAT etc) from Bosch, but around £90 from anywhere else.

If you’re only changing the oil seal then you don’t need the special alignment tool as that is only required if you’re installing the timing cover. A new crank seal will come with its own disposable alignment sleeve which protects the seal lip as you slide it over the end of the crankshaft.
