You don't "need" to but as its only a couple of plugs that are not interchangeable (one for speedo & gauges and one or two for the warning lamp module) it makes access so much easier if you unplug the instrument panel and work with it on your lap or on the bench.

I've just done this. As said, it is one connector for the instruments and two for the warning lights. I found it was better to have the dash panel out as some of the lights were a bit of a fiddle to get back in. It was nice to be doing it in the warm
