Only just discovered this. What a cracking thread. Thumbs Up

In a previous life I had a construction company specialising in converting old barns. Loved what we created out of what we started with.

You have some real skills and your work looks fantastic. Great job. Bow down Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy.

A lovely positive thread - brightening up these dreary days.

You have an excellent skill Clayton and what appears to be one of the best jobs in the world.

It’s all very interesting also - I was particularly surprised to hear that the Chinese products are one of the best, and also the point about the recycled plastic fasteners.

Some lovely photos too - including the one or two with Millie in shot 👍

Many thanks Screbble for your kind words Very Happy

Alas we don't use Chinese reed anymore as the quality has gone from the reed and is very much weaker so it wont last as long as it should do Rolling Eyes
We now use Lithuanian reed as it's the best at the moment with the quality and the length of time it will last Thumbs Up

It was a cracking morning on the roof today and this was one of my views

Re: Dressing a roof.

Not what you think Laughing

This method is Called " Dressing the roof " It's for getting all the different types of moss off the roofs and at the same time is to get the " dead " ends off to help the roof last longer and then to level out any dips/valleys so that the water does not concentrate in that one area and then the roof will ware more evenly Thumbs Up

So the first pic is what the roof looked like before i started, i forgot to take one of the whole roof Rolling Eyes ........................

The next pic is to the right hand side of the ladder and has been dressed, you can see the difference what it has done and the dark patches are were the moss was holding in the water and not doing the reed any good, if left it will rot out that part very quickly ..........................

The next pic is the whole of the back roof with the dressed and the part of the roof waiting to be dressed, you can see by the lightness of the dressed part it is drying already ...........................................

Now to do all of this work, you need specialist tools Wink In Devon we call them Drifts, other parts of the country call them by different names Rolling Eyes

The first pic is of my right hand drift, as you can see i have modified it to cope with the toughness of the reed by putting some metal on to protect the wood ............................................

The next pic is of my left hand drift, not used to much and sadly not maintained as my right hand drift is .......................

I hope you have enjoyed this glimpse into what i do Very Happy

By the way, all of the moss and dead ends of the reed make good compos, so we have always people after it Wink

So moving on 6 years, time does fly as it only seems like not to long ago we did this Rolling Eyes

We came back to re-ridge this property about 2-3 weeks ago, sorry there is no before pics but both sides were in a pretty bad way and there was even more moss on the roof, so we did what we call now " a belt n braces job ".
This is where we dress both sides of the roof, full re-ridge, spray both sides of the roof with a moss killer and wire net both sides as well Thumbs Up

We had to re-thatch the porch as it was to far gone to repair

All finished

Looks superb, and fully in-keeping as well.

So many houses would look much better thatched around the country.

Just discovered this thread. I swear the forum has more floors, wings and corridors than Windsor castle!

Amazing pictures. I always love spotting villages tucked away with lots of thatched roofs! Wish there was more about really. Bet it's hard but satisfying work. The Yeti - 110 Camper https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic90308.html
