Non-return valve front washer
During some light winter maintenance I tried to unblock my front washer jets. A needle didn’t help and in fact only made it worse. I used some compressed air (dust/air in a can) and sprayed directly into the nozzle. This worked an absolute treat and cleared both with easy using only a few seconds of air. Both worked fine for a short while….

I remember recalling the sound of air escaping in the bonnet during the clearing but assumed it was a straight feed to the pump and was probably some sort of expansion valve.

The system is now best described as ‘limp’. I haven’t seen any wager fluid leaking underneath, nor is the washer bottle empty. I wonder if I have blown the non-return valve.

Does anyone know where the non return valve is, is it easy to see and access? It is 110 2.2 puma with air con. I have attached the schematic for the washer system.

Thanks for any advice or possible areas to check for damage.

Re-posted on the Puma 2.2 section. No idea how to delete this!

Although not Puma, mine is down by the side of the heater box, close to the bulkhead, under the bonnet on the near side. There was sufficient ‘give’ in the pipe to carefully pull out it to work on it.

Replacing mine was transformational - night and day - but others remove them completely.

Good luck 👍

Thanks Screbble. I will have look later today and let you know how I get on!

Only 2 weeks into Defender ownership so this should be a gentle introduction to self help maintenance 😂

It’s all good fun as ‘they’ say.

As you will see from the photo, they are only small so have a ‘feel’ along the pipe first and you should find it.

It’ll be literally tight in the corner, in the gap between the heater box and inner wing.

Good luck 👍

Found it! Very easy spot in the 2.2. But still in the same space with a little more room. Took out the valve, cleaned it and rebuilt it - small amount of crud. It was actually a blockage that I had pushed further down into the pipes. So a bit more air, focused from the valve end in the right direction this time, worked a treat.

Mmmm just had one of my ‘new’ NRV’s come apart resulting in what looks like an ectoplasm exposure.
Quick fix but flipping annoying ☹️

Did you need to remove anything to locate/replace it?

No just ‘feel’ for the pipe adjacent to the heater box and you will find it 👍
