As that picture is the W terminal should be the lowermost terminal with the post, nut and spade terminal.
If you look at Gwyn bay post below. Third photo down is the rear of the alternator. Hover/Zoom over the photo and you can rear the terminal designations. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175055601161?ch...3kEALw_wcB |

Thanks, I thought it would be the bottom one, just wanted to make 100% sure instead of blowing up a brand new tacho.

No problem. Your taco should have a potentiometer screw on the side maybe dip switches on the rear to adjust the idle speed and needle sweep. Idle should be about 750rpm on a tdi and max out around 4000rpm. I remember it can take a bit to get this right, I drove around for a week or so tweaking the gauge until I was happy with it

It does appear to be very faintly marked with a W below that post/tab:

It does, it has a trim pot on the back and I have an optical RPM meter to calibrate it with. I do like the idea of a second alternator, I need to see if I can get a bracket kit here in OZ without having to pay 50 pounds for shipping. You guys are fortunate to have so many parts available in the UK at very reasonable prices. |

@Martin
You know, I think you may be correct. I have some work to do on the girl, the previous owner didn't believe in cleaning much, LOL. Got some chassis rust to deal with as well but price-wise wise I stole it and it only has 24,000km on the engine so I can deal with that. Having a vehicle hoist in my home workshop helps. |
