Steering box leaks
Hi all,
I’ve noticed a fairly excessive leak (only at full lock) from the lower seal on my 02 defender (4 bolt steering box) going through the paperwork it looks like a new box was fitted in 2012 (20k miles ago). Not long after that in 2015 the truck was parked up for 8 years.

I’m hoping that given the long standing period I’m just dealing with a perished seal and not a worn/corroded shaft.

Has anyone replaced just the lower seal in situ? I know it’ll be abit of a pig working on it from underneath but I’m reluctant to take the box out and refit it only to find it still leaking and having to do it all again to fit a new box.

I replaced mine on a bench, with the sector shaft removed, so I cannot say if exchange in situe say is doable or not. But had made a thread with my overhaul. https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic79246.html 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Thanks I’m sure that’ll come in handy when I do tackle it. It’s not ideal but currently I’m getting by (and not losing and fluid) by keeping it off full lock. But I do want to get it out the way soon as it can’t be long before it gets worse

It is never good for the box to put in a full lock. Note that the bottom seal will see full pressure from the pump on a right lock. On a left lock not.
I think I read in the owners manual also no to keep on full lock for more than x seconds (I cannot recall the x value, but might had been 30) as would overheat the oil. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

If it was'nt a Genuine box or Adwest supplied then I would just replace it, the cheap rebuilt boxes are a liability. The bottom seal you can see above the drop arm is just a dirt seal the pressure seal is higher up inside the housing. The seals usually leak because the lower bush or shaft is worn allowing to much side play on the sector shaft.

I’ll check my paperwork and the numbers on the box tomorrow to hopefully determine if it’s adwest or not. Also to see if it was fitted new or recon.

Thanks all
