APlan / Howdens no longer insure Land Rovers because their underwriters have pulled out of that market. Even Land Rover Insurance is not insuring some models because of the risk.
I lost £12k in six weeks on the value of my Defender because of the insurance issue. There's lots of post on You Tube discussing the issue. The thing is, it's been an issue for a long time. Over on the D4 Forum discovery theft through key cloning has been discussed for years and LR did nothing about it, just as they did nothing about spare wheel theft, which was rife and tow bar theft, when the D3 first came out. I've been with Adrian Flux for 5 years. Nothing has changed with my details in the last 5 years. Always renew with them. They then sent me a letter to say "they can no longer insure this vehicle. Goodbye". I have also called Lancaster, and was told they cannot quote me 😤 |

I've just come off the phone with NFU - I told them about the discussion in the forum and was helped by a friendly guy who guided me right through the process and then after 40 minutes on the phone, I was told that WE CANNOT PROVIDE YOU WITH A QUOTE 😤 The stated reason was that it was not Garaged overnight 🤷♂️ |

Yep. It's an absolute joke. I wouldn't mind; this isn't even about trying to get the best deal... I can't even get a quote, which means I have zero options other than to sell the vehicle, which I don't want to do. Fuming.... |

Well this is certainly worrying news.....I've heard a lot in the press about high value Range Rovers being very expensive to insure and that insurance premiums generally even for normal cars are increasing 20-30% or more on renewal but didn't realise there was a specific problem with Defenders. I drive a 2012 USW and have been insured with the NFU for years. My policy renewed in October as normal with an increase in premium of around £100/year up to £637/year.
My vehicle like most on this forum has a few modifications, which have all been declared to the NFU and have never been an issue to them. I'm now wondering what will happen next October when it's time for renewal again?! |

At this rate JLR are going to be dead in the water( pun intended). For all of Gerry’s poncing around and using marketing terminology on stage JLR started the move to push the everyday person away from the brand and in turned oversaw the push to attract the better off with technology and toys that would never be used to its full potential. But in turn the real consumers for their products are the ones that don’t want to pay for them, but hey why should JLR care, the owner with insurance cheque in hand would just skip back into the dealership and ask for the same spec model to be reordered. Win win for the dealer and JLR, it’s a new sale, aren’t we doing well…..pat on the back, some crappy tyre valve covers and a bunch of roses for the missus. But thats now changed. Dealers can’t sell stock, because consumers can’t afford to insure them. The drive to update the security of pre 2022 keyless entry models is a sticky plaster on a corpse. Insurance companies will need to see a minimum of three years loss data before they will drop premiums. The consumer is not going to wait that long especially with other bills to pay. Again not helped that the insurance companies don’t even recognise the enhanced key security of the latest models. Which begs the question as to why, is it laziness on their part, is it contempt on behalf of JLR to prove that their current stock is better secured because they were so used to the extra sales thefts gave them, or is it the financial companies that are embedded in these insurance companies playing their ‘green cards’. The latter may sound odd, but this came up in an American press report earlier this year and did affect smaller brokers. A friend of mine just ‘part exchanged’ his 2022 RR Sport for the new Lotus EV SUV and more than halved his insurance premium. I say ‘part exchanged’ loosely. Two weeks before collection the dealership said that it didn’t want the RRS, and so he was forced to sell it at a loss via one of those we buy your car sites. Even then he had the Lotus for two weeks before he got shot of the Sport, which was an added expense. |

I am in the same age and experience bracket as you. Earlier this month I bought a late 2015 (65 plate) 90 hardtop. but with no modifications. After much searching, with a number of quotes coming in at over £3000 I accepted a quote from;
https://www.performancedirect.co.uk I have no connection with the company, or experience with claims from them, but the quote was the most competitive. May be worth trying them. What is it that I'm missing here. Whilst I don't yet have a Defender, I have plugged in the details of examples I've been looking at into comparethemarket and the like with quotes coming back at reasonable rates. I have used such sites in the past and always got the rate quoted.
Out of curiosity I entered my details for a quote for a 64 reg that is for sale and got quotes back from numerous insurance companies. |

However you can see where insurance companies are coming from....old Defender theft is at epidemic levels (check out Landywatch, it's scary) and Range Rovers are disappearing at the rate of over 10 per DAY lt's also about where you live. For instance Range Rovers are currently pretty much uninsurable in parts of London. l am with LV and l have just renewed the policy on my 2022 90 Commercial, l was waiting for the worst but it was under £700. It might be due to the value on new Defenders. lf l put in the price l paid many insurers wouldn't quote. But realistically the value is now just under £50,000 and that seems to be a threshold, quite a few quotes. Most were still high though, AF wanted £1800. l tried to get Puma Defender insurance as l have seen a beautiful low mileage 2015 110 XS but l couldn't get anyone to even quote. Old type and new some model Defender prices are currently falling and that's why. l tried with a 110 TD5 and while better, l was being quoted silly prices with an outright refusal from many companies. l am hoping this will eventually start to improve. Land Rover are recalling models with keyless entry for a security upgrade. My local specialist dealer isn't taking in any more old type Defenders because they can't shift them. |

I have just insured a 2014 Defender 110 with Admiral (last month) as part of a multi vehicle policy and also a 2003 Defender with AA in June 2023.
I am 55 (but look older!) with a clean licence. |

Have you tried other 2016 Defender number plates to make sure there isn't a marker on your specific vehicle? LR Workshop
