The M57 has so much torque that I can't see an overdrive being of any use, just fit higher transfer box gearing, its easily capable of pulling it.

As above - I’d say the M57 is leagues ahead combined with the auto box.

TD5 wouldn’t be a consideration out of the 2. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

It’d be interesting pairing a box with a td5 engine. The ratios in the r380 is rather limiting. A tuned td5 will produce similar figures for a fraction of the price. Personally I wouldn’t spoil a perfectly good td5 for the conversion, but if I still had my 2.2 I’d be chomping at the bit Laughing

I know I know... A guy is allowed to potentially change his mind you know Rolling Eyes Rolling with laughter I am still wary of all the plastic, but I get why folks are keen on the idea.

Thank you for the tips. I havn't spoken with demand yet but will do tomorrow. Did you give them precise measurements or have they previously jigged one up ?
Tried to get hold of Marcus, I know he's a busy chap. Messaged another guy on FB who seems to be working with MW to get a cubby. Also messaged Lucari who were very prompt to reply and happy to do it, subject to placement of shifter and switches.

What size is your TMAX compressor and does it need a seperate resovoir bottle for the air suspension ?

Has to depend on what your starting point is, how much you want to spend and who is physically doing the conversion.

The Td5 is a fine engine and of course an engine factory fitted by Land Rover in the Defender. So if you want to keep it factory, it is a good choice. And moderately easy to make it look like a factory install.

Lots of Td5 engines available for little money too and few alterations needed.

If you have a 300Tdi or later (excluding Tdci), it should be an easy swap. If its a 200Tdi or older then it is more work.

The M57 will be a more expensive choice and while the engine was used in the L322, you will end up with custom parts to complete the build. There are also a number of different approaches to fitting this engine depending on what gearbox you want to use and what vehicle you source the engine from. While it is a proven path, it is a far more complex engine swap and I'd guess likely to cost 2 or 3+ times more than a Td5 swap.

The biggest reason to go for the M57 is power. If you don't plan on tuning it or making use of more power. You'd have to question why go down that route. But bigger power may also require other upgrades too.

That all said and done, there are still lots of other engine swap options too. If MPG isn't your primary concern there are some interesting petrol engines to consider.

Without wishing to hijack this thread:

Starting point: 1985 127, 3.5 V8 (original), but the vehicle is undergoing a full rebuild and I have a new 4.6 and R380 in storage that was originally destined for it.
Budget: Healthy but not endless.
Who is doing the work?: Me Cool

Given that the GVW will be 3450kg, and it will be used to tow 3500kg, power is definitely a consideration. A petrol V8 would be my preference, but I can't completely rule out fuel economy given that it will be a vehicle for exploring and to a small extent, work. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

i didn't give any dims for down pipe, think he has a jog, depending on engine type you need to specify sensors needed or not.

Lucari offer a cubby box/gear selector locator option?

i run a single head T max compressor that feeds an air manifold. this in turn has the pressure switch fitted to it. plus outputs to axle lockers, PCL fitting and an air reservoir. i have used A6 air suspension res in the past for this job but any air res will do it. its a reasonably cheap was of fitting air to a vehicle.

i am similar with my 130. going from 2.4 to m57n2 auto with 1.3 box on 235/85s. i want the torque.

its not the engine thats expensive its the conversion kit. Cheers

There is still something about a Rover V8. A 4.6 is a good way to 200-250hp, but there is no denying it'll like a drink.

My p38 is currently showing 13.8mpg, which really hurts the wallet with fuel prices these days.

If you want more power then supercharing the RV8 is an option. Several ways to do this on a home build. The RV8 will make a better noise than the M57 and be smoother. And I'd think power could be similar given a similar budget considering you already have the 4.6

So it really comes down to mpg. LPG is really the only way to reduce pence per mile costs with the RV8. But won't be for everyone.

Other petrol engines I think would be interesting. BMW 6 pot as per the S. Africa variant. The 2.8 can easily make cira 230hp and if you coupled it with a 1.6 transfer box and a Roamerdrive I think it would make for a nice alternative to an RV8. Although probably slightly less low end grunt and a bit more revvy.

Probably slightly cheaper than the M57 conversion but similar. Biggest advntage is petrol refinement and power delivery vs the diesel.

Chevy LS has to be on the list too I'd have thought. Crate engines are well priced and likely to cost similar to the M57 conversion. Sadly no good manual conversions though, they are mostly automatics.

My top engine choice however would be a Jaguar V8. As it is also a Land Rover engine. Good choice from 300hp 4.2 and 4.4 options plus supercharged options. Either wholesale with the auto or my preferred choice with the ZF 6 speed manual. Bit more work than an RV8 but a much more modern engine. Suspect MPG won't be massively better, but you should be talking more power.

For a 130 I think I'd also be considering a Cummins swap too if you really want to go diesel.

Nothing against the M57, it is kind of on my list too although I probably would not consider a Td5. I have an LT-77, so would need to change gearboxes, maybe seat box and perhaps props. Which seems a lot of work to just go to a Td5. Guessing you probably have an LT-85 with the V8, so you are in a similar boat.

Agreed, Rover V8s are lovely, just not comparable with modern V8s.

An LS3 is on the cards, but I've yet to see any solid MPG figures and whilst it's not a dealbreaker, I can see it not getting the use it ought to if it only managed low-mid teens. Quite tempted by the Ford Coyote 5.0L, but it's a less common swap...

Cummins are phenomenal engines, but too much for a Land Rover IMO.

M57s are undoubtedly excellent engines, but I'm just not sold on them yet.

If going to all the effort, I'd probably go automatic. Whilst I love driving a manual, there is a lot to be said for a modern(ish) auto box. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread
