Door locks... aaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!

When I bought the DCPU I went mad & bought a load of bits for it, including a genuine replacement ignition lock & 3 matching lock barrels to replace the ones that were not matched to the ignition lock - two front doors & an extra one for the rear door I plan on fitting with a custom canopy.

Anyway, never got round to fitting the new ignition lock back then, but fast forward 12 months & I am getting fed up of not being able to lock the doors on the key so this morning it was time to fit the new ignition lock & then replace the door locks too. For the record, I bought the set from a well respected independent LR specialist after giving them the vehicle reg to make sure I got the right parts - LR077438.

Stripped the dash down & removed the old ignition lock & replaced with new one, all good & pretty hassle free - I even managed to sort out the second remote so now have two working remotes & new keys on the main & spare key rings. Now to the door locks.

Door card off the drivers door first & removed C clip, lock slid out with no hassle, brilliant! Barrel was gummed up with a mixture of dried white grease & mud! Stripped the outer sleeve off & cleaned it then cleaned the crappite out of the door handle itself. All good I went & got the sealed bag with the three new lock barrels in then...

The new barrels are not the same as the existing ones & no way will they do the job -

!

So, what to do now? - can't return the kit as I have fitted the ignition lock already.

I have the lock number so could order new barrels to match the key, but don't want to do that due to extra cost to me.

Could clean up the old barrels then transplant the tumblers from the new barrel into the old one, lots of faff but would work ultimately, but not keen to do this as the old barrels are full of crappite & corroded too.

Or should I go back to the retailer & curse & swear to no avail as I bought the things over a year ago!

Anyone got a pair of door lock barrels that are in better condition than my old ones that could be used for a transplant?

I haven't had to do it myself but I believe the end of the old barrel comes off by pressing a pin in the hole you can see. You then swap it to the new barrel.

As a 'bush fix' I have swapped the tumblers over from the new barrel into the old one as I wanted to get the lock back in the door this afternoon. I did wonder whether there was a pin to push in but a) everything is crudded up with dry white grease so what looks like a pin wasn't moving & b) everything was crudded up with white grease so it wasn't evident that the barrel could be removed from the end piece. Will have a look again in the morning as it is very easy to remove the barrel from the door handle. If it comes apart then the tumblers will be going back in the new barrel & get used on the passenger door

Will update once I have done some more investigation!

Yes you depress the brass looking pin and pull the end off and fit it to your new barrels, you’ve not been duped it’s the right part.

NickMc, sorry for not posting an update, my D4 has died

so I have had other things to focus on and not yet got around to trying to remove the bit from the end of the lock barrel. If time permits, this will be on my list of things to try and sort out today...

Yay!!

After a few squirts of IPA, use of two pin punches & a small hammer I managed to get enough of a gap between the lock barrel & the end piece to get a small screwdriver in & lever the two bits apart.

Result I now have a new lock barrel fitted to the drivers door. Passenger door will get the rebuilt new barrel once I've done that & third barrel will be kept ready for fitting to the rear door later in the summer once the canopy has been fabricated (note I didn't say this summer...

).

Is it still possible to buy a lock barrel to match your key number?
I don't like carrying loads of keys
It's for a 2007 TDCI if anyone knows the part number

Morning all

I did the same job on mine, just a little late to the party to add help!

You can order one barrel from LR… but.. for literally £15 more, you can get a genuine full lock set. (Note to self it does not include the shear bolts)

As I have read up, the ignition barrel appears to have a shelf life.. I went all out and replaced all. Plus you never know who still holds a key for your car..

(Ok) not that they really need a key.. but you know what I’m saying
