No one appears to have told Mercedes & Porsche who both have models with DRL's low in the bumper that they are supposed to go off when the dipped headlights are on. From driving towards then at night, definitely looks like the DRL's are on. Harder to tell with Audi and new LR's/RR's as the DRL's are in/around the headlight.
Could there be different rules for original build vs retrofit? as does the Evoque. Keith 2010 110 Utility Station Wagon 1996 110 Station Wagon |

DRLs stay on all the time. The Audi system is slightly different as the LEDs are so bright that when placed next to other lights they failed the type approval regulations, so they developed the system that dims them down when indicating.

Im guessing its a grey area then as our Smarts that have DRL's all switch off as does the LP560 & C-Coupes

I am always fascinated by the worries about legality of items on Defenders.
I suspect that almost all of the additions to Defenders could be in breach of one regulation or another. Couldn't it be argued that a steering guard or changing the front bumper to a heavier duty construction could be a breach, I have heard that changing tyres to a mud and snow pattern could, in the event of an accident be seen as not being appropriate for on road use. Didn't someone question whether roof racks break the 50 kilo limit that some insurance companies would say is a safe load. I suspect with the wrong police officer and in the wrong circumstances we could all be in trouble one way or another. I think we just have to accept the risks and ensure we have better legal council when we need it. |

Sticky,
I reckon your intercooler grille is illega! It far exceeds the quality and thickness expected of that fitted to a Defender! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

apart from "regular" defects (bald tyres, lights not working, knackered exhaust) the only things the fuzz aren't keen to see are numbers on the sides of vehicles and the wires that camel trophys have between their bull bar and roof rack.
fashion police dictate that led bumpers on defenders are highly illegal |

haha fashion police if you stick by legal you will never have the stuff which you want eg fitting spacers on defender to bring out wheels imo i think a landy looks good when the wheels stick out past the arch most people do it and most people think it looks great but that is clearly illegal as the tyre is past the arch, you have got to be a complete to pick on little things like that especially lights in a bumper what i say is they need to catch the reall criminals stealing motors etc instead of picking on minor bolted on bits on a car

To get DRLs couldn't the side lights just be wired to be on all the time, maybe with an LED bulb, or am I missing something?

I do have a slight problem with DRLs on cars. People will get used to seeing them, and motorcyclists who are riding with their lights on trying to make themselves more visible to incompetent drivers will be affected by being less obvious. I have a single small blue LED positioned on my bike so drivers get a tiny hint or glimpse of blue light for this reason

Blue light of the flashing variety is definitely illegal on any vehicle except an emergency vehicle.
Steady blue light, I am not sure and I do not have time to trawl through different amendments of vehicle lighting regulations. I had an incident once when saw twin flashing lights coming towards me. So took normal cautionary reaction, slowed down and pulled over as far as possible to the left to give oncoming 'emergency' vehicle as much space as possible. 'Emergency' vehicle was prat with blue leds on windscreen washers. Flashing was caused by long curve with lots of trees causing the 'flashing' Driver was a complete prat So put blue lights on your vehicle then you might just get pulled by the boys in blue! Brendan |
