Whats up with these horns!
Ok, I am not much of a honker, but my wife insist I 'educate' the french drivers at times. So recently I honked and nothing.. no sound..

So check fuse (ok), check power at the horn (nothing). Also notice only one horn fitted on the left and wire has been messed with (spade fittings) so needed to dig further. Traced back the poor splices and hook up the horn - nothing. Mhh tried the horn on straight 12v nothing. Bad horn.

While first looking at LRParts I find these horn connectors are odd and well mine is chopped off. So instead I buy two (two tones) OEM Hella horns on Amazon with spade connectors.

Received horns today and proceed to wire one up... test and just a puny little buzzy sound. Hook up to 12v, same thing - bad brand new horn. Try other horn and finally proper horn sounds.

Then looking at my stash I find one old defender horn with the correct weird connector. Then I find the wire on the right side is dangling loose with the weir connector. Plug it in and presto horn sounds. So will leave that and get the Amazon returned so I can fit the second horn and then should be good.

So I have 4 horns (all Hella BTW) of which only two work. What's up with Horns are they that fragile?

Its a BMW horn standard BMW horn plug less expensive to buy a BMW horn. Yes they do fail especially when not used occasionally. I have two Hellas in my 110 as the OE failed after 20 years. meep meep… Thumbs Up 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

You might find that you can get the faulty horns working by giving them a sharp tap on a hard surface.... The coil inside might be stuck and that might free it off.
But your post raised another point for me.... Are you saying that there is a horn connection on each side of the car?... I'm pretty sure I only have one horn fitted to my 2005 TD5

Td5 and Puma vehicles should all have wiring for two horns, one each side, a high note and a low note. I thought all vehicles had both but it may be that some poverty-spec models.didn't. Alternatively it may just be that the factory forgot to fit both sometimes.

All Td5 and Puma vehicles have a connector for the alarm sounder on the nearside, and all Td5 and very early Pumas also have the BBUS connection on the nearside. Later Pumas built without the BBUS need to have the wing harness swapped for a Td5 version if you want to fit a BBUS.

Yes there seems to some science suggesting two slightly different tones makes for a more effective horn, hence you can buy them in pairs.

One of the new horns I bought started working with a tap (thanks) but rather than butcher the one remaining plug thats fits on the one LR horn I had laying around, I will leave the new horn on the shelf. I did have the two different tones.

I went from nothing to everything. Now I just to remember to use them.

also i believe the horn is the same unit used in later metros and MGFs. I know the MGFs use the twin setup. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
